View Full Version : I had Troy turn up my boost w/wastegate...

Well, at idrc i ran a 14.1 then a 14.0 and i realy wanted a 13 so i had him do the wastegate mod. He just moved the screw on the wastegate 5 or 6 turns to tighten the spring. He says that it gives you like 1-2 more psi and holds boost longer (defenitly NOT good for the stock turbo but who cares:p) I didn't realy feel any difference but on my 3rd run, the engine was much hotter than the first and second runs and i still had a lower et and higher trap so maybe it helped a little. On my 2nd and 3rd runs, i had identical 60's;2.049 and i ran 14.046 abd 14.041....Just thought i'd share the free mod:fro:
*eek* Altering the wastegate can be very hazardous to your turbo's health...especially if you don't have a boost gauge.
Didn't you just get a new turbo? hahaha You gotta get this one to last a little while at least. :)

Do you have a stock turbo? How many pounds are you pushing on it?

I have a boost gauge and i spike at 21 psi in second gear and it drops to 13 or so by redline.
what were you at before the wastegate mod?

same...he said it holds the wastegate closed longer...
Sounds like an indicator of the turbo being completely maxed out. ;)

That's a good question. I know for the Volvo's (or at least the newer FWD ones) adjusting the wastegate actuator rod (making it shorter) only makes the boost come in sooner, but the ECU will detect this and not allow the max boost to be raised. (It's controlled by a boost control selenoid) BTW: this info is for the Mitsu TD04-15G turbo (used in all US Volvo 850 T5's) which is good for a max of about 19-20psi MAX.
I guess it all really depends on how your boost is controlled. (Be it BCS (boost control selenoid) or MBC or what. ) that determines just how bad adjusting the wastegate can be. For Volvo's it is a very safe thing that most do, but as with most free things, it must be done in moderation.
