Seed to Leach ratio's are gonna blow for comcast users.

Boo on that! I haven't heard anything on this yet...I wonder if I had my IP masked if it would still be throttled...
That is quite possibly the most homo thing I've read since Lance Bass' big news.

I'm gonna go ahead and call BS on this article. I'm seeding a rather high profile file right now with out any problems. Uploads are ranging any where from 76KPBS-150KBPS, more than acceptable for a 768 KPBS down speed.
I think the general problem lies in the idiots who think seeding a file requires them to select the "seed" option. Selecting the seed option when you don't have the means to provide the data screws up the whole torrent for everyone , even a well seeded torrent.

I'm with you ^ I have no info yet, but I will be able to confirm or deny by tonight. If they are throttling people, it must be people who have received "the letter" in the mail many times over. It sure seems bunk by all rights so far. If they do that, I will show you how to get around it :) Chances are that they will not be blocking ports, but they will go by the IP address most likely. I have a guaranteed way around it if they do.

The easiest way would probably be just to get a client that encrypts packets such as Bittornado (Packet encryption was just recently added), but thats only to thwart sandvine if they are just smelling packets. http://www.bittornado.com/faq.html If they are indeed filtering just by IP address than getting around it is probably just as easy as a VPN mentioned here and many times over at the other place.
BTW which letter are you talking about? The "you've been caught pirating letter" or the "you're using too much damn bandwidth letter"?
Not a torrent user, but sucks for those who are.

I know very little about any of this, but it sounds like a bait and switch tactic from Comcast to me. If any of you fall victim to this I would suggest a class action suit. Regardless of their TOS, they advertise otherwise for bandwidth and are legally liable to uphold to their advertised package.

i really, really, really wish verizon was in CO. i would jump to fios in a heartbeat. but since it's not, i'll have to settle for XOHM WiMax next year

Verizon is working feverishly in secret to lay down the fiber lines right now. There are rumors about them setting themselves up with doing this to fall down. The prices for FIOS are staggering to say the least, but like everything else they will drop...but not until all of these lines are laid out. We will have to wait and see. If Comcast does end up doing this then it would be because there was pressure because of the line that is crossed concerning copy protected material when it comes to torrents. This is the reason for the letters going to the homes of people who were "caught" downloading a movie. Most times the movie is not even in the file bringing up questions about if anyone is really stealing it if it is not really copy protected in the first place. It only says it is a particular movie, but if you look carefully you will see that it is not the real deal.
The letter I was talking about BTW was the pirating letter. There is alot to what Martain is saying too though. We will have to see.

FIOS is currently priced at $49.99 for the 15 down/2 up, and that would be epic compared to what i'm getting, and for the same cost =D
Supposedly Colorado has a shit ton of dark fiber already in place, so it should make things easy for anyone trying to start up an FTTP service like FIOS.
Anywho, i'm running a few fresh seeds now, just as an experiment really. Will let them run for the next few hours and see if I can notice any traffic shaping. There's 4 possible scenarios:
1) It's all bullshit speculation.
2) It may not be active yet in all markets/only active in select markets.
3) Dependant on traffic conditions.
4) Ability to dedicatedly seed has been ass raped.
Hopefully it's 1.

I havent been able to open Bit Torrent for two days now. It's completely unrelated probably but ever since I read this thread I havent been able to open bittorrent.

Try a different downloader. Some of them get that way after time. I highly recommend removing it and replacing it with Utorrent.
No lie. I'd jump on the fios bandwagon in an instant.

Here is what I have so far. I will not have the full explanation until tomorrow, after we get it from the engineers. Alledgedly it is normal practice with every IP to throttle the conection this way to prevent downloading of torrents. Comcast throttles the actual bandwidth slightly above advertised speeds, something that is not practiced everywhere. This is to ensure that the customer will get the correct speeds by the time it hits their computer after being distributed from the node. I will have full details tomorrow in the afternoon complete with talking points that should answer any questions.

If you can get some tech specs, methodology, processes, documents (ya right, lol) or anything that would be epic. i'd love to learn how comcast shapes such a massive network.

My friend got a letter from Comcrap telling him to stop downloading illegal videos. He was using Torrent.
He switched to news groups stuff and is now getting 5-6 mbits down, way faster then the torrent shit was.
Evil_SpeedRacer
08-20-2007, 07:04 PM
No doubt. Lots of people go the way of the newsgroups. its worth it to pay if the throttling will continue. Plus it is more secure. I will probably be paying out for one soon myself. Word is there are more files that you normally cannot find with torrents.

What are newsgroups?
Street_Kings
08-20-2007, 09:13 PM
I use newsgroups, and the content is massively better, as is download speeds. The problem, though, is newsgroups are horribly user unfriendly. Basically if you've no previous experience with newsgroups, you'll probably quite literally need someone to take you step by step through it it's such a huge clusterfuck.

Just out of curiosity can I ask you what newsgroup you use? I've been looking into them but am finding it hard to choose which service provider to go with.

you can either do the monthly fee, or just buy blocks of bandwidth. I opted for buying 50 gigs, because i only go to the groups whenever i can't find a torrent so a monthly wouldn't make sense for me.
