anybody get the red ring of death?
I sent mine in 2 months ago for it then got it back last month. It worked fine until last night. I got the red ring of death again:mad: So now I'm waiting for Microsoft to send me a box for shipping and now I have to wait 4-6 weeks to get it back. Just venting.

mine did that a few times, but I have not had it happen again. I never sent mine back either, I just said if it does it to where it will not work I would send it in. I just didnt want to wait 4-6 weeks for a new one.

Comes from the 360 crashing due to heat ( most of the time)

Ohh well i read about the overheating isssues and I made sure to put a small fan to kinda keep airflowing around the vents....Plus i have it sitting on my desk printer stand so ALL of the vents are exposed, even the ones on the bottom.
Terry's did it once, had to replace it. The neighbors did it, as well. Didn't do it until after we played Crackdown (coincidentally on both Terry's and the neighbors). Yes, Crackdown, the MS owned game that was used to pwn modded systems. How convenient...

BASTARDS! My box is unmodded so maybe that why I am in the good huh? Fucking Microsoft pulling some scandelous shit like putting malicious software in there games to dismember modded systems, would not suprise me. Damn its like owning the world is not enough for them.

I added a fan that is made for the 360, to stop this problem, it was only $20. it works great.

well the second time for me I don't think it had to do with heat. I just turned it on to watch an HD-DVD and the Xbox just froze. After I turned it off and on the 3 red rings appeared.
I put my Xbox on top of the the entertainment center and it isn't covered by anything so it couldn't have been any heat issues.

All you have to do is buy another one and return the shitty unit.

Why send it back at wait weeks when you can just buy another one and return the shitty one?

Well, neither of theirs are modded. I think (along with many others) that Crackdown simply caused several machines to just fuck up, regardless of whether or not the machine was modded.

Ah, yes.. the method of the M@.

It just makes sense with everything that sucks. Buy something new and return the crappy thing
Of course it makes sense, that's why I thought of it.

If they have the serial number on the box, as well as on the unit, they may not accept the old one. Something to consider, but I've used this method several times for a "quick" warranty.
They usually won't check if you do it at a Walmart/Target/etc. where they really don't seem to care enough to check.
At an actual game store, better believe they'll check. ;)

I just exchanged my 360 a few months back because it wouldnt play one game consistantly. I bought one at wal-mart, returned the old one a few days later. They do a serial number check at the service desk, to make sure it was sold from Wal-Mart..but since I had a day 1 360..the serial never got scanned. Of course, they never scanned it at wal-mart either, so I had 2 outs..but the new redesigned box should not crash.
Sure you can get a PS3..and you can also pay more for a system that really isnt any better and has like 2 games worth playing. No thanks.
Besides that..the xbox has been out quite a while now, you really think the PS3 isnt going to have some issue?

The crackdown patch was just the sickle of the ban reaper, MS had been gathering data for quite a while prior to that. The modded consoles were banned from live, and many people, modded or not, seemed to get the RRoD (red ring of death) error afterwards.
Anyway, don't worry about it anymore.
If you warranty your box today, you will almost certainly get the updated cooling system with additional heat spreaders and heat pipes which address the overheating problem. Also, the sealant holding the GPU down has been reinforced and much more was used than in the earlier revision.
As for the PS3, it's not susceptible to overheating. It's really not susceptible to good games, developer prioritizing, an entry level pricepoint, nor a decent market share, either, though.

Microsoft have contract with 3 major distributor to make their Xbox360. But too bad one of the distributor put in shitty DVD-game Drive and cause all these problem. It's really sad that Microsoft don't test the Xbox360 before selling it to everyone. I guess they just want to sell mass Quantity Xbox360 then have a good Quality product.
Hmmm, where did you get that info from?

yep, prob closer to the 1.15 billion dollar number quoted in source. It was so bad that Peter Moore jumped ship to EA. At least MS accepted the problem and decided to fix it.

Not the dvd drives causing the problem, but the improper cooling causing the BGA on the GPU to fail. The manufacturers of the DVD drives are Toshiba/Hitachi, Samsung, and BenQ, all of which are very prominent manufacturers. If anything, BenQ is the odd man out, but it's actually the newest drive.
Sounds insane, but a heat gun or wrapping your entire 360 in a towel/comforter or two and turning it on for about a half hour so it gets stupidly hot, then powering down for about 15 minutes, then back on, your box may work for a few hours. Seriously, lol, google "towel trick". i've witnessed this on one box and it's probably the most apeshit insane temp fix i've ever seen.

The towel trick actuall worked for mine for about a week, then it got to the point where it would just red ring after a few minutes of play.

I just bought a new 360 elite, so I'm going to sell the old one once it gets repaired. Hopefully this one doesn't get red ringed. At least I have HDMI now.

ALL boxes currently being manufactured are HDMI equipped (and have the upgraded cooling/heatpipe gear), not just the elite. That's why they're having the blowout sales at some retailers.

OKay so has anyone used the walmart/target exchange tactic recently? I just got the Red ring and don't want to wait to send it off? I guess im just worried that walmart will scan the box and the consol. Any suggestions?

Right on. Maybe I will just go that route. I hate being shady and would not prefer to leave the cost in the hands of the retailer. Especially since I didnt even buy it from them in the first place. Do they require any receipts or anything when you call Microsoft or just serial codes?

i got mine back with in 7 days
there pretty quick on the turn around rate, and i ahve the new halo 3 special edition one...
when i got the red ring of death, it was first due to the intercooler malfunctioning... took that off, and it worked for another day, then i got some error.. called xbox they said they would repair it... so i chucked the xbox across the room because i didnt want the same one back if it already went bad... this caused a rattling noise (not sure what it was) but in 7 days i got a brand spanking new xbox 360 from xbox, and a funny ass letter, stating that due to a screw falling off inside it caused a short, causing the xbox to malfunction sorry for your troubles we have provided you with a brand new xbox 360.......
dont know how many people can get away with that.. but i sure as hell did
