I recently bought a 23 inch Samsung LCD TV and I wanted to hook my macbook pro up to it. Are there any advantages\disadvantages to using vga or dvi (dvi to hdmi)? My TV has a vga input and hdmi inputs.
Thanks

Go with the HDMI only if you plan on displaying HD content from the notebook to the TV. If not, then its a waste.

HDMI carries both audio and video... and DVI is only video.

Either way, since you're using it as a monitor, either DVI -> HDMI or a VGA cable will work. If you're running the cables a long distance, go with the DVI->HDMI as it's a digital signal that will not degrade as opposed to the VGA (analog) that will. Short distances though, go with the VGA. you prob already have the cable too.

I would choose a DVI over a VGA connection ANYDAY.
Is there a way to buy a computer monitor and use it as a TV screen? Computer monitors are just so much cheaper than TV's.

If you have an external tuner, yes.
I'm currently doing this as a bedside tv, have an extra 19" LCD i have hooked up to my comcast box's HDMI out port =)

This is what I do. Works great with DVI...

I use my big screen in the living room for a secondary monitor via S-Video sometimes. Well until I got the DVD writer anyway...
