No, I wish it was for you know what, lol. Just another Thornton cop being a dick while I was running errands today. I wasn't being loud, driving to high revs, nothing... he just said my exhaust was louder than factory. When I asked what his DB meter reading was, and he said he didn't have a DB meter, I asked how he knew it was louder than factory. I said, "have you heard a (insert the year/make/model of my daily driver here) from the factory?", he replied No, so I asked how he knew it was louder than factory.

"Look, I don't have to argue with you about this." "No, I know you don't and that's fine. That's what I needed to know for when I fight this in court. Thanks."

I got a 60$ exhaust ticket in the Springs last month. I was under 4000 rpm's not on it but still got the shaft, Told him its fucked up that we spend 500$ for a good functioning exhaust, and we get the ticket compared to an older POS with rusted out exhaust, doesnt even exit the rear, louder then anything, or any Harley I ever see is 10 times louder then any car, Cops see it and think it's cool.

No fucking shit. I'm thinking about fighting it, based purely on the fact that I PROVED at the time of the ticket he has no PROOF it's louder than stock. He admitted he has no idea how loud the car is stock, so I'm tempted to use that as my defense.

Thats what I would do. He must have had a wild hair up his ass and decided to pull over a car with a "cannon" exhaust because they are usually loud. Your car is turbocharged so its quieter than any NA car with a less restrictive exhaust. It has to be under boost to be loud, which you were keeping out of. It should be something you can fight in court no doubt, judging by the way the cop was completely full of shit.

Fart cannon = you aren't going to win in court unless they care so little about it that it's not worth their time to convict you

The law doesn't just say that it can't be louder than stock... it also says that you must have a functional and properly maintained muffler, and it defines what a "muffler" is and what it does, so you really do need a real one if you want to comply with the law. Even a stock exhaust can be in violation if it emits unusual or excessive noise.

And that's just state law. Local stuff may be more strict.

Look on your ticket for what ordinance/law it was. Go look it up, and see what it specifies as to exhaust. If its vauge like Nebraska, you'll probably get hosed fighting it in court like i did. Our law just states exhaust is to not be excesively loud or something, but it doesnt specify what DB is to loud. I fought mine, and the judge said its was the officers discretion as to being too loud. I even brought up the Harley thing, and it did not matter at all.

Well, if I have to pay the fine, then I have to pay the fine - whatever. Just wondering if anyone knew about how much to expect, or if anyone had experiences with fighting them. Like I said, if I have to pay for it, it's just money.

This is not the stuff I want to read after reading how loud the AAM exhuast is on the Z... :(

The Z is a sports car, so you can probably get away with it. It's sport-compacts that mostly see the enforcement of this law because it's easy to tell the difference between a stock econobox exhaust and one that doesn't choke it to death (or especially a ricer one).

Yeah I don't think you have much to worry about. When I had my civic I drove around with no front bumper and an open downpipe for about a week, then just an open downpipe for another two weeks. My exhaust was still loud as shit when I finished it and I never got pulled over.

I think usually you need to be driving like a d-bag to get an exhaust ticket.

Both good points. Still wondering if I should spend the extra $80 on the silencers or not. I'm assuming since they are an option, that they are something that is easily installed and removed... ??? Guess I could always just get them later if I have problems. W's probably right though, they seem to be less tolerant of ricer-type setups, even if they aren't really rice.

I was pulled over in thornton for the same reason, the cop ended up being cool as hell, and I joked around with him for a while about it.. Out of curiousity I asked him how much an exhaust ticket was and he said in thornton its only a 10$ ticket.

That's the thing. I was driving completely normal. I was at a stop light just listening to the radio, light turned green, I drove, shifted at 3k rpm, and again, then cruised in my highest gear at about 45, so it was as quiet as possible - my exhaust isn't that loud, so I know what he heard was rather quiet.

Silencers are really easy to install/remove. Oh, and my exhaust isn't a ricer-type setup, the tip is rather small... not sure what this cops deal was today.... this is the first time I've EVER been hassled, and I used to drive around Thornton for 2 years with open downpipe on my old Civic, in front of cops, next to them, etc. and I never hid that it was loud to a certain extent - never got pulled over.

Shit, I live in thornton and all of my cars are loud. I always thought the cops didn't care around here....shit.
Yeah, no kidding I thought the SAME shit. See the reply above this one.

Cool beans, if that's all it is, then no worries. But I'm doubting that's all it really is, to be honest. I'll update the thread when they mail the papers to me.

Must of just had a hair lodged in his arse that day... Or maybe he was angry that you had a cooler exhaust then he does on his personal car. :D

Indeed. However, I plan on putting a stock exhaust on, taking pics, showing the DA, and using this sort of defense (which is basically what I stated earlier, and already asked the officer the same stuff):

I know a guy who had a court order to put the stock exhaust back on, and then have it inspected.
