So I took my car down there today...routine oil change...figured they could prolly handle it right? Anyway, they got it done and we were in kind of a hurry because Eric was with me and he needed to get to work. So anyway..I go to start my car to pull it out of their bay...and I have a fucking CEL. I was like...errr..umm...they didnt notice that? Nice 18pt inspection kids.

Anyway..so I'm like..hey you just changed my oil and now my CEL is on. They said it wasnt a big deal...I'd be ok to drive it to drop Eric off..yadda yadda...and they would look at it when I got back.

Well, I wasnt really cool with driving it like that..so Eric rode the ghetto shuttle to work and I told them I wanted it looked at right away. So he tells me that there is no way they would have done anything that could have caused it just doing an oil change...and they would check it out...but I'd have to pay for it if it was something else. If you know anything about my luck with car dealers you can imagine I was rather pissed by this time.

Anyway, so they checked it out...pulled the code and said they couldnt find anything wrong with it..just a "random CEL" but if I had anymore problems to bring it back to them. Does this sound like a total load of shit or what? Anyway..its staying off now..but I'm really curious as to what the hell they did to my car.

My advice, stay the hell away from that dealership...period.

No shit, especially for an oil change. It is amazing how many "automotive professionals" can fuck up an oil change. :smashfrea

I dont trust that dealership, I took my car in to get my wheels looked at, I dropped it off, and when I get back I have some asian kid asking me about where I got my motor...I didnt know you had to open the hood to check the rear tires. I've got nothing against the asian kid that asked me, but still. John Elway Honda isnt the best. Plus the old man almost hit a curb when I was in the car. oh well.

Those clowns charged me $9.23 for an exhaust bolt! That's what I get for going to a sellout's dealership. And wtf is a "random CEL"!? Did they tell you what the code was? Somehow I doubt that the CEL just comes on because it feels like it. Mine sure hasn't.

Hey guys remember me? I am a Honda tech that used to work at a dealership until I got so bogged down with bullshit and paperwork I could no longer fix cars. Now i work at a Honda repair shop that can take care of anything you need. Oh, by the way Mike, they probably unplugged something and set the code and are too embarrased to tell you what they did. There is no such thing as a random code.

thats EXACTLY what I was thinking...he said it was some random air code or something I think..I'll have to look at the ticket and see if he has the exact code on there. Just that he was like.."oh yeah we checked it out..its fine now...get on your way bubye.." and made no mention about me paying for the labor to check it out made it seem kinda fishy...

I went there the other day to look at a car they had listed online. The car was sketchy.. the salesperson and 'showroom' was even more sketchy. There is no way I'd buy/service ANYTHING there.

All dealers are morons in my experience. Domestic and Import. Ask what number a "random CEL" is and to show it to you in manual. It's bad enough when the person touching your car is incompetent but it drives me over the edge when they try to insult my intelligence on top of it.

It's alot easier just to change the oil yourself because then you know YOU did something wrong if the CEL comes on where as you dont know if John Elway Honda F****d with it anyways

hrmm..not sure its "easier" to do the oil change myself...all I have to do is hand them a little plastic card and sign a ticket. My dad is a real car guys car guy...but let me tell ya why even he pays for an oil change.

1) its fast
2) its cheap (for the most part)
3) if they screw something up...they get to fix it.

Besides...I dont want to deal with waste disposal, jacking the car around, going somewhere to buy the filters, the oil..whatever. Transporting that shit nasty dirty oil in my car...umm...no?

I can get it changed most anywhere for under $30 in 15 mins...call me lazy..but I say its money well spent. :)

We could change the oil in 15 mins. pretty easy if you ask me. I agree with them having to fix whatever goes wrong. You might wanna check with Tobi or Butch about the CEL though, if it comes on again that is.

I'm a moron? Thats pretty harsh...I will be the first to admit I dont know everything there is to know about Hondas..or my car for that matter. However, as I was saying tonight...I owned a 99 Civic EX, and now the 00 Civic Si, drive/drove the HELL out of both of those cars....never ONCE did I have a CEL, not one time in 100k+ miles.

Maybe you're just trolling...are you a honda tech in your spare time too? :)

im not a tech there and theres a reason its called a random cel,

The reason is that they're too lazy to check the code and see what caused it so instead they just clear it and call it random.

Do you know how to check the error codes yourself Bedlam? It's pretty easy. You just take a bent paper clip and short out the service connecter under and to the right of your glove box. Turn on the key and count the flashing of the CEL. Long flashes count for 10 and short flashes count for 1. For example 2 long flashes and one short one is 21.

There are pleny of resources on line to look up the code, and I'll bet that someone here knows what it is if you can't find it anywhere else.

exciv2000
09-23-2002, 11:37 AM
Is there an easier way to clear the code than disconnecting the battery? I hate doing that, and my negative battery connector is hating it too.

HONDA GHANDI
09-23-2002, 05:51 PM
If you pull the radio/backup fuse in the underhood fusebox it will clear it for you. I think its a 7.5a fuse.

Take your car to Elitches and make it ride the MIND ERASER! But that will cost you like $45.

So the customer who demands satisfaction is annoying huh? You bet your ass you'd hear from me if I got a CEL after an oil change. How do you get a random CEL from an oil change anyway? Lemme get another thing straight. You clear it and send them on their way? Does it really take that long to read a code to find out if there is an actual problem? You know, something that could inconvenience someone down the road? Fuck dealerships, I'm sticking with Tobi.
