Time to switch to Comcast LOLz

Just frustrating because my wife and I are taking online courses this semester. It was a particularly bad time, but work is submitted and done, stoned, taking a vacation on Thursday, all is good. Was that a "hai ku?"

Yeah, Qwest sucks. I had DSL with them for a little over a year... their own installation CD just died in the middle (and I know I'm not the only one that had this problem), so I set it up manually and it worked for a while, but would occasionally just go down for hours, and it seemed to lock up the DSL modem a lot when I used AIM.

I recently switched to Comcast... I had Qwest shut off my service on June 20th, so they did that and gave me a confirmation number and said they'd send me my final bill... being that I had just paid my bill which covered service through the 21st, I was expecting a small refund. Instead, they tried to bill me for June 22nd - July 21st service. WTF!? What a blatant rip off. That's a whole month of service that I couldn't possibly use. Needless to say, there's no way in hell that I'm paying that. I haven't even bothered trying to call them about it yet... it took me 30 damn minutes when I just wanted to shut off my service, and then I ended up talking to a mental defective who kept trying to sell me shit.

BOOO! on Qwest. I work for Comcast and could go on for hours about why DSL sux, but I won't.

What's hilarious is that I had the exact same problem Weston described with Comcast when I moved from Broomfield to Aurora. I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em?

Maybe I should look into cable since my employer reimburses me for high speed internet. I'll never give up my Dish, and my wife insists on having a land line, so the thought of another service provider is giving me chills.

Good for you! I'am one of those geek techs, and run into qwest dsl problems alot. I also am very familiar with tech support on both ends. With Qwest, its always a some guy from india named Mike, and they charge for anything. With Comcast, they replace any hardware no prob, and its a local guy for support.

Qwest just sucks, go with Comcast!

We do have the upper hand when it comes to support. We have local people for support at your home, on the phone, and in chat to answer questions and get things straight for people. Where I am at, we handle chats for the entire West Division for CO, WA, NM, AZ, OR, and a couple more I can't remember right now. When we leave for the night, at midnight Denver time all of the chat traffic goes to 2 different outsourcing places, so there is NOT as good of service after that time. I am trained in all 3 products for many different markets, which is hella hard to do because they all compete so nothing is the same from place to place except the services. Its challenging, but hey thats why its fun! I think we put really good service out there, so its easy to stand behind them.

Here's a tip, when we were having problems with our internet I spoke to some girl in India or something for almost an hour and we were without the internet for like three days. She finally told me that there was nothing she could do and that I needed to call Hewlett Packard because it was a problem with my computer. I was so frustrated, so I called back and spoke to someone the next day (he was a technician who fixed my mom's phone a few months ago) Anyways, he called customer support for me and found out that you can actually ask for an American rep. Wow, who knew?

Anyways, I called the main number and the guy who answered was in another country and I asked for an American rep... he kind of dicked around for a few minutes and tried to get me to tell him the problem... after a little bit of that I kept asking and he sent me to someone who actually helped me. Once I was finally transferred to someone in America I was on the phone for 10 minutes and our internet was back up and running perfect. I told him that the girl in India told me to call HP and he just laughed. He was like "how are they going to help you?" He was also unhappy that Qwest sends calls overseas because he said that it makes their company look bad because those people don't know what they're doing most of the time.

Imagine that...

Oh, and don't forget to note how long you were without service. I'd make sure to call back and ask for a credit. There's no sense in paying for a service that you're not able to use.

We do have the upper hand when it comes to support.

not to be a downer -- but i've had the same shitty customer service with Qwest and Comcast. Last year it took a day and a half to get someone on the phone that could understand "I just bought a new cable modem and I need you guys to enter the MAC address"

---silence---

and FWIW there weren't indians, they all spoke 'Merican just fine.
On my 6th or 7th call i finally got someone that was in Canada, i believe, who said "oh ok, lemme get into the system" and could do it...

Issues I had with Qwest never got resolved on the first call either. I work with a guy who just signs up for the deals then switches when the term runs out to the other guys for their sign up deal and so on and so on... i'm waaaaaaaay too lazy for that so i just bitch when i hafta call customer service/tech support

I've been qwest-free for about 2.5 years. Comcast cable & vonage work pretty well for us. Until the cable goes out. :)

But - I had DSL for years and years, and it was very, very reliable. The only time I was down hard was when they switched the infrastructure in my local PoP and they failed to tell me that I needed a new/different dsl router.

Unfortunately, thats how it goes when you provide a service. Nothing will last forever as far as equipment, and then there is the whole human factor. Truth is, you will always run into the problems in customer service. Some are worse than others, but I think its important to look at the products from the customer side of the fence.

Shove my deals up my ass...maybe you should pull the tampon out of yours. You obviously need some assistance with your connection, which I would be happy to help you with. Maybe then you could stop being such a jerkoff! Imagine that!

Seriously, pm me if you want that problem fixed. You should not have to pay for services that you are not able to fully use. I would even get you some credit for however long it has been only at 4m. I have no problem with helping you HondasTrail even if you hate my guts, out of principle.

Evil, do you have an extension I could reach you at? As I stated, i am always calling tech for various reasons, alot of times to have you guys diagnose where the problem lies. It would be awesome if I could talk to someone I knew (well, sorta, fellow forumite).

Evil_SpeedRacer

That router may be the problem, I would like to see a traceroute and ping with the router connected and not connected. Some speed tests would b in order too. When I get to work on Sat. I can check the connection from us to you, make sure that the correct modem is provisioned, and make sure that the correct service is selected on our account. I've seen it where the 8m service was selected, but then on the provisioning screen it was the lower tier because the modem was put in the house before the faster speeds came along, and they are just too old to work with that speed. Any way it goes, I will make sure its fixed. Deceptakhan, I will be sending a pm.

The modem is a Terayon TJ715x (which I bought from adelphia before they flopped but comcast is trying to charge me a lease for that too. Have called billing several times to get it fixed and was basically ignored)
The router is a DI-604

System is an AMD 3800 x2 running at 2800
2 gigs of ram
Dual boot with Vista and XP
Tests were done under vista but I get about the same numbers if not slightly worse in XP.

It could be the quality of the cable signal to the modem. Too many splitters, or poor quality splitters can have a big effect, especially on uplink speed. I was able to get 6800 down and 1500 up with just 6mbps service when I only had one splitter between my main cable feed and the modem. Then I put another splitter in between and the uplink speed was cut in half, and the downlink took a bit of a hit too. My digital cable tuner is far more sensitive though... OnDemand seems to need a pretty good signal to work. I ended up using a digital-friendly cable amplifier so that I could split the signal in such a way that the cable modem and tuner would work, and my analog TV's would still get a good signal.

HondasTrail
07-19-2007, 02:47 PM
Thats the thing there are no splitters on my line its just one cable straight out to the box (I only have internet no TV), and I know the line out to the box is good because I laid a new one my self before adelphia was bought out.

BTW evil I can get you any info you need off the modem, I know both the ip and the pass to get in.

Edit again: the box is almost in my back yard, it's three feet to the east of my back yard.

The signal is a very important thing, and when I pull up the modem on Sat. I will know right away if it is in tolerances. I will get that modem set up correctly also, as you do own it and all. I hate when people don't help in billing the way they should. If you got that modem long enough ago, that could be the problem right there. I have run into this problem before where the speed should be 8m but its at 6 or 4m, its usually because it is still in the system set for 4m, or that modem will not support the 8m. Usually we find that the modem does not support that speed. I will know a lot better when I get to work and access the modem from my end. I will also find out if you can take your modem you own now, and see if they will exchange it for another one that will show as owned modem in your billing.

It looks like it might be the modem from what I can tell so far. I find it interesting that the times are more when the computer is connected directly to the modem. 30 seconds or less is within tolerances but those ones over are not. We will get it sorted out though, I will make sure of it.

john
07-19-2007, 04:06 PM
FWIW, I'm seeing just under 20 meg down, and 1.5 meg up via comcast in Castle Rock. 1 splitter at the junction box, 1 inside the house.

I'll post a link to a speedtest.net session once I get home.

I just got Hondastrail fixed. He should be posting happy things soon. As for John, the test is so fast because of speed boost. It automatically speeds the line from 16 to 20m in the first undisclosed amount of seconds. After that time it will go back down to the normal amount. I forgot about it :P
