View Full Version : Is this too much?
This is Flyin' Miata's FM II Turbo Kit. It is supposed to come with everything that you need to run and tune your car as soon as you are done installing it. It is $4,600. At first I thought that that was still a lot of money for a kit, but then I noticed that they have a stand-alone fuel management system included (I think). That is the FM ecu that totally replaces the factory ecu and you get a handheld computer to tune it with. It also comes with pre done maps to start out with.
Here is what comes with the kit. Do you guys think that it is too much? It seems pretty complete to me.

sounds like a damn cool miata!
Here is the link to their site. They are here in Colorado. Check out their project cars. Their race car Turbo Dog, makes 340 ft/lbs of torque!!! These cars only weigh 2200 lbs stock. I still can't convince my cousin why I want one.

That looks like a sick turbo kit. I happen to like little miatas if done right. ie...turbo, race suspension, race seats, good light wheels w/good rubber. I think they make a mean little sleeper...

sounds about right for the stuff you get. Rev hard turbo kit costs that and doesnt come with half of that stuff.

To me Miatas are only cool if they have some ponies,in stock trim they handle great but have no oomph.

holy crap stu, where do you think you're gonna get the money for a turbo kit? your teg got you $10,000, right? What year miata do you want? And how much is that? Besides that, how much did you still owe on the teg? So are going to have to take out a big loan? Oh the woes of being the girlfriend!! However, I think you should do it anyway because it sounds really cool (and I love the miata site) and I want to ride around with you
The Integra is already paid off. I want either a '94 or '95. I plan on saving money so I don't have to finance anything. Financing a turbo kit would be dumb.
P.S. If you really want to ride in it, you better help install the turbo kit!

I think I ran into one of thier cars on C470 one night.
Needless to say I got smoked.
Really? Now you guys are just getting me excited and motivated. All I need is a job, and about $12,000.
On their web site, under the FAQs, they talk about reliability. They say you can drive everyday boosting 12psi on a stock motor. They have over 400 happy customers, and the longest living turbo engine so far is OVER 170,000 miles!!!! I want one so bad.

Now if only you could explain to my cousin why having a stupid fast, sweet handling car that is susposed to be slow will be cool. Did I mention that it only weighs 2200lbs?

First things first explain to your cousin about power to weight ratio. If he still doesnt agree, buy the thing, turbo, and give him a ride. He'll learn, real quick.
He knows all that, he just wants me to get a third generation eclipse or talon. I know he will change his mind after we put the turbo on. He's the one who is helping me anyway.

The kit is definately worth every penny. My good friend has a 93 miata that has been upgraded to FMII specs plus some other stuff as well. The car is a blast to drive, especially at a track like second creek. The car will be at Bandi this weekend since being freshly tuned on Flyin' Miata's in house dyno, it should easily see 14's and with some luck 13's. Here is his website with various pics and such http://www.getboost.com/dennis/index.html
Thanks for the link, good stuff. I just saw his car on the dyno-pro web site tonight. Is he running a stock motor? Does he run 15 psi all the time. Also, how long has he had this setup? Any noteworthy problems?

His car has been turbo'd for more than 2 years now prolly closer to 3. He usually runs 12 PSI on the street and 15PSI on the track. His car also has the older non-ball bearing turbo that they used to sell with the kits. So he only sees about a 10 HP difference in power between 12-15, but all of the new kits are sold with the ball bearing turbos which will give a bit more power still.
Also keep in mind that you WILL need a new clutch as the stock unit can't hold the added power. FM sells a complete ACT clutch and lightweight flywheel combo for about $900. If you end up with a 94 - present miata you can buy just the clutch for about $500. If you have a 91-93 miata you can also buy the same ACT clutch that the newer cars use, but you must find a stock flywheel out of a 94 or newer car. If you didn't know the 91-93 use a 1.6L engine and have a slightly smaller clutch, but the bigger clutch from the newer cars(94 - present, 1.8L) is a direct fit so that is the reason for needing to change the flywheel.
To answer your question, he is running the stock internals and has had no major problems.

IMO the old miata's with the pop up headlights aren't that sexy. but that would add to the sleeper factor.
