How does an open source operating system make an enough to money to sponsor a race car?

Donations. See http://Tux500.com

Their goal was $350k to be a major sponsor and get some big graphics on the side of the car, but they have only raised $12k so far, so it's a smaller deal. It's still cool to see open source represented in the Indy 500 though.

Sounds like their users are a bunch of whiny bitches if they can only support this OS that makes them all feel elite by donating 3% of the goal.

or it could be this little stunt was barely known about? This is the first time Ive heard of it and I am one of the few linux advocates who also happens to be a gear head.. I make 6 figures a year thanks to linux, I give alot back to the community in both code and donations.

besides $350k is a fuck load of money.. the stunt to raise money to take out an ad in the NY times for firefox had a shit load of publicity and face time and it still took them some time to scrounge up the $50k or so they needed.

I just wanted to take a stab at Linux users. No real harm intended. I wish I knew Linux, I don't, but I make a decent living taking care of MS servers.

I was sure a lot of it came down to publicity but the Firefox thing you referred to is another perfect example of what I'm talking about.

There are plenty of Firefox/Linux/insert non-MS software here users that go around bashing everything and talking about how OMG, you use IE still? or OMG, Linux can do everything MS can do but WAYY better, etc, just because it makes them feel like they are above the crowd of average computer users.

If Firefox users really used Firefox because it is so much better then they shouldn't mind donating a dollar to whatever this fund raiser was to promote their agenda and give a push to a MS competitor.

Firefox is so much better and it's my sole browser, but I dont feel inclined to donate my cash, sorry.

This is awesome. I just donated a few bucks, I figure I have 7 systems running linux, I could afford to pay $2 per copy =)

Since the car is blue, it would be funny to put a BSOD on the dark blue part of the car and see how many geeks get it.

The car is going to stall and coredump at the start.
