Here's the problem with that "strike"... people will still use the same amount of gasoline, so they'll just compensate by buying more either before or after May 15th. The oil companies make the same amount of money either way.

If you really want to hurt oil companies and lower the price, you need to actually lower the demand for gasoline, which means having days where people don't use it.

That's not even close to being right. According to CNN (http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/price.html) they pay around $5.50/gallon. To Americans, that sounds higher than it really is, due to an unfavorable exchange rate for the US Dollar to the Euro, and the fact that the tax structure in other countries is different from ours. In other words, their income is divided up differently from ours, so they pay more for some things and less for others. Many European countries also have decent public transportation and less need for gasoline, which can somewhat increase the price due to them not buying in bulk, but it also means that the annual cost to the consumer is not neccessarily higher.

I should also point out that Euro gas is higher octane than US gas. That's why "Euro-spec" engines are of higher compression (which tends to get better fuel economy and emit less pollution).
