View Full Version : Turbo Briggs and Stratton.... NEED HELP

I am just getting started on a tech project for school. We have little 3hp briggs motors that we are taking apart and rebuilding, which is no issue. We also are required to do some sort of performance modification to complete the grade. I opted to try just a little turbo setup for fun. I would obviously need something tiny because the engine is only spooling at about 3500-3600 rpms. Any help would be apreciated. I am obviously not looking for a horsepower marvol, just a bigger gain over stock, without spending very much.
Thanks for all the help
You'll need something like this:

Pointless turboing a 2-stroke motor, though.

Briggs are not 2 stroke. And it is NOT pointless to turbo a 2 stroke. I have seen some 300hp turboed snowmobiles that are far from pointless. Gawsh!

Like ghandi said, they're not 2 strokes.
I use to own a turbo 2 stroke snowmachine, only 600cc's and 280hp.

appreciate the help guys.. Can anyone list some models on the turbos that will work for my application. Something like a t-25 will proly be too big correct?

I just got a free 6.5 HP Briggs and Straton motor that runs perfectly.......hmmmmm, turbo go kart maybe?

Also, what are going to be advantages to turboing this engine, if any.. Any alternate things performance wise that I could do to it?

More power? When it blows up, it'll be awesome?

My neighbor was throwing away a lawnmower because he dropped a screw in the pull start mechanism lol, I asked if i could have it he said yes....took me 10 minutes to take out the screw.......runs like a champ!

Briggs and Stratton engines (at least the one I took apart a number of years ago) have a fan-controlled rpm limiter. A fan/flywheel blows on a plate that's attached to a pivoting arm from the carb, the arm is countered by a spring. If you use a stronger spring, the arm will not move as far, and the engine will go faster. How much faster is safe? I dunno. I shut the engine off right away when I figured this out by accident.

Yea.. Hmm.. I will have to have it running on a the kart.. So im not sure what to do. How much of an increas would I see with the turbo.. And how much pressure do you think this little engine can hold. Whats the best turbo to use, looking at cost to be as low as possible.

i have a itty bitty k03 turbo, i still think that would be too big but ill sell it to you for 50.

what about it? You run a line from the (oil pan) or similar to the turbo, and the piping is pretty dang simple. Im just trying to calculate power gain and how much boost these little things can take...

its also gonna run pretty hot because those little dudes are air cooled!
Sorry, I thought it was a 2-stroke.. and let me rephrase, had this actually been a 2-stroke, it would have been pointless to turbo such a tiny one. I still think regardless it's a waste of money to turbo such a tiny motor. Just my $.02

Um, a V8 is twice the size of a Honda motor. A Honda motor is like 5 times the size of a lawnmower motor. Don't compare apples to oranges.

If we're talking about a 10 hp gain on this motor that would do wonders for the power to weight ratio on a go kart. Just because it isn't proven doesn't mean it couldn't be fun.
As shown in the above links, they're capable of producing only about a 2 hp gain. Sure, it'll give it a little more go, but is it really worth the money it will take to make a turbo work on it? I mean, if you have the money, don't let my jibber jabber stop ya'.

Thanks for all the input guys.. This wasnt a thread to debate motor size, lets keep it on track please. Thanks to all.. To the top
At this point its looking like a thinner head gasket for high compression, some sort of exhaust, work on the air side of things, and tweak with some other things..
I am still interested in a turboed kart for myself. I will be using a bigger engine platform I think though to start with..

Mill the head and run it on alcohol along with a bigger carb and a straight exhaust pipe, it'll run like a raped ape. Also knife-edge the crank, that helps alot.

Sounds like fun! I got a 500cc motor in a JetSki I'm not using. Go kart maybe?
Anyway. What are you plannnig to do about fuel demand?
More details please. Pics if you can!
Hmmm.. he could always just run a high compression piston, and race fuel. :D

All are being considered. any other ideas? I am still considering boosting it with a small enough turbo on about 3 to 5 pounds. Found a weisco piston for it too, but would only plan on building my personal kart

Yep, had an old lawn mower that I took the top off from. When I would start it up, I would just take the spring out and put it to full throttle. It would get ridiculously hot and I would usually pour a gallon of water on top of it when I was done with the lawn (40 minutes). The water would boil immediately.
Surprisingly, the fucker didnt die from my engine abuse but from a rock or something. I somehow managed to bend the crankshaft.

If you really want some juice on a go-kart, put in an old civic engine. You could get a working one for free somewhere I'm sure.

I was thinking about that on the way to work. Like a cheapy one.. Not to sure if I wanna mess with all the computer components and what not

Maybe Find an old smog pump from an older v8 truck/car..Find a way to belt drive it and gain a few PSI of supercharged fury..
Seems like something cheap to make and add some fun to the power of a little motor..Prolly safe too?

Cheap? You could find an old CX 85hp engine for free.
The computer components wouldnt be too tough to deal with either

It takes 75hp just to turn one of those.

any lawnmower shop will have one and for the turbos you have to find a company who sells the larger toro(generally golf course size) and they can get you a small enough turbo that spools at about 1500 rpm
