So I just finished installing the Greddy turbo kit all by myself with a small amount of help from friends last nite on my 96 Civic with the d-series engine. I took it to Trenz to get the E-Manage installed and tuned and they call me a little while ago and tell me that if they tune it on the dyno that there's a chance that the engine will blow because there is a rod knock. They also said that it would cost more to fix the problem than to replace the engine. So I don't know what to do...I'm at a stand still here...I need your help guys...

Trenz...lol.
thats weird they they cause it too knock? did they drive it around the block and beat the hell out of it? they did that too my friends car last year we caught them driving it(blew the motor they installed) he purchased it from one of the tech's there. and got our money back and told the better business bureou. Or he did lol..

there was a d16y8 longblock for $300 in the FS section, buy another d-series for cheap and swap them.
then take it somewhere else to tune, maybe servion or tc's, i hear good things about both of them
i have a d15z1 block you can have for 50 bucks running short block.

I'm pretty sure that if there was rod knock that you would have heard it, unless they check for rod knock prior to tuning cars.

Sorry to hear that man. Just look for a bottom end, hopefully the D's are a lil cheaper.

I wouldn't be too mad, you can always get a new d-series for $150-$300

Well to be honest my car has been sounding funny ever since I bought about 2 years ago but it never gave me any problems though and I've raced it a lot and to this day it still runs fine. I just don't want to have a blown engine on my hands, that's all. TC's was gonna charge me $825 to tune it because I needed to convert to OBDI therefore I had to buy the OBDI ECU, conversion harness, Hondata and get it all installed and tuned. Since TC's doesn't tune E-Manage. So I think I'm gonna sell the turbo kit. Keep an eye out for it on the FS section.

Oh and yes Trenz checked the car first, which is why they they called me and said that they didn't wanna tune it or install the e-manage kuz it might blow kuz of the rod knock when they dyno tune it.

How about get a second opinion. Check with ImportSports. They are right down the street from trenz. They can also Dyno and they might be able to tune emanage.

I took it to trenz kuz it was gonna be way cheaper to get it tuned WITH the OBDII ECU that's in the car right now. I don't wanna replace the engine kuz one: It's gonna be expensive(I've already blown my money on the turbo kit) and two: I've never replaced an engine...

If you find a cheap engine I'm pretty sure couple of people from this board will help you change it out.

I called around and regardless if it has the turbo kit installed or not It's gonna blow. I just don't want it to blow sooner with the turbo kit

There is no way a simple rod knock would cost more to fix than a whole new engine, they're full of shit. At most you would have to turn the crank and get new bearings, I doubt the rod hit the block. I would first drop the pan and make sure everything is tight down there. If you can't get to sirtef9 then I can also do it, as long as it's not a race weekend. I just don't tune these things, yet, no dyno.

Everything's fine down there kuz I took off the oil pan to tap it for the oil return line and everything looked good, everything was fastened and tight. I need one of you experienced guys to come check it out. Regardless I'm taking off the turbo kit.

Labor to pay someone to do that would be more than a used engine, from the looks of it.
Do eet yourself if you've got the downtime. D-series would be a good beginner-engine engine, if you've not done internal work before! What's the worst that could happen?

Sell the kit and keep an eye out for a cheap B-series swap. If you been rollin the D for awhile I would find a cheap B-series and work with that until you can boost that swap.

I'm gonna sell the kit, with the money that I get I'm gonna get a paint job a newer engine and sell it so then I can get a down payment on a new car like the new Civic Si.

i can intall a new bottom end for pretty cheap. just PM me when you find a motor.
for what its worth my car just recently started knocking and within about 20 miles it went from a very slight rod knock to sounding like it was about to throw a rod out the side of the block.
trenz might be full of shit and trying to rip you off, but if not and it really is knocking then dont drive it at all.

It's been making the knocking noise ever since I bought the car like 2 years ago and It's never given me any problems, plus I've raced it a lot of times. I was just never aware that the noise was a rod knock.

Well considering the labor to pull the motor and machine work, new parts, etc. it's MUCH cheaper to buy another engine and swap it out. You don't just pull the pan and replace bearings, talk about redneck shit right there.

I think you're right, kuz I took it on the highway yesterday and floored it on 3rd gear all the way to redline like 5 times and it pulled hard. When it gets dyno tuned doesn't it get redlined on 3rd gear anyways?
