View Full Version : Motor build for boost questions...

So I have a builder LS motor that's been sitting around for about 6 months in my backyard and now I want to start building the block for a LS/Vtec turbo build. First I have some questions:
1. Is it ok to rebuild this block even though it's been outside in the snow?
2. What machining can I do to it for a turbo build?
3. What internals should I get?
4. Should I rebuild the block to OEM spec or different specs?
My plan is to build the head also but that will come later, but I want the block to withstand upto maybe like 400-500 HP on boost. I'm on a tight budget so a full on build isn't realistic but maybe like a mild build or something of the sorts. Forgot to add this will be for a daily driver.
LMK your suggestions and advice... thanks!

really you dont have to build it at all but it will be a bomb waiting to go off.i would get it sleeved and get eagle rods and arias piston.as for the head use supertech springs and retainers.with this set up it will be good enough for anything you would ever want.i ran this ecact same set up in my drag cae and made 686hp 475tq.

Did you do any work to the head? I forgot to mention I want this as a daily street car too.

do you understand how much power 4-500 is in a daily driven street car?
i'd aim a little lower, thats just me. good luck with your build!

400-500hp and a tight budget don't go together. More then likely you'll end up with a 250-350hp street car, anything more on the street is pretty much useless.
Yes you can build it, snow doesn't hurt anything unless some snow/water got into the cylinders and rusted the walls but even then you can just bore it and that'll solve that problem. If it's not rusted you can get away with just doing a good hone job depending on how bad the cylinders are. I'd take it to a machine shop and have them check it out and see if the cylinders are not out of round, if they are then just bore it, bigger is always better.
You don't need to do any special machining to build it for a turbo.
Get whatever internals you want to get, just about anything is good these days, ask Honda Ghandi what he's been having good luck with lately.
OEM specs are always nice.

If you are building a DD 300 WHP uncorrected would be plenty.

Ok then, I guess I'll shoot a little lower. I don't want to be cheap on a motor build so I'll be spending what's necessary for it to be reliable and for it to go fast but if it's possible, I'd like to spend as little as possible.
What machine shops are there around the Denver/Aurora area?
Honda Ghandi or anyone else, what do you recommend for internals?

I'd go with corillo rods and weisco pistons. Contack Head by Paul. They did a lot of my work and did work for other people I know and everyone is happy with them.

For 300-450 ish I use Eagle rods, wiseco or CP pistons. I can beat Pauls machine work prices if youre interested.

Do I need to get sleeves? I was reading up on Benson sleeves and are sleeves only necessary on higher HP/race motors?
You got PM Honda Ghandi.

sleeves are only need when you want to scare the shit out of yourself with all the powa you have,,,, J/King... you will be fine with stock sleeves and good internals, just make sure you don't skim on the tune, its the most important part of a build if you ask me, just talk to tobi or Jeremy (servion) they will give you all the info you will ever need, trust me!!!

Ok then, is that all I need then for now to just bore and hone the block?
What are the advantages of boring the block to a bigger size?

More displacement.

Will having more displacement, saying making it a 2.0L, make the motor run more reliable at higher HP's or is it only needed for high HP cars? Is it good for boost?

if you are going to a 2.0 liter you will need to get it sleeved

Oh ok, nevermind then.
What other things should I do to get the block prepped for ls/vtec?
