Yea...so...a couple days ago I was gonna replace the thermostat in my car for the first time because it needed to be replaced. The car wasn't heating up on cold days and when the car was warmed up it would show on the temp gauge that it got cold again when I started to drive it. So anyways, I did the necessary steps to replacing a thermostat and when I went to pop off that one cover where the thermostat was...voila! NO THERMOSTAT! I laughed and then continued to install the new thermostat. So I thought to myself: "Well that explains a lot!", then I put everything back together and guess what? It works fine now. So yea...lol. Just one question though: Was I damaging the car driving it without the thermostat or was it fine? Remember it was my first time replacing the thermostat in there or should I say there was never one in there to begin with. I bought the car like that and was never aware of it. :)

Driving without a thermostat all winter? I bet your heater didn't work real well untill you'd been driving for 7 hours, but no, no harm done. You probably got crap for gas mileage and power, but damn your engine was cold!

Ya, you should be fine. You just did what racers have been doing forever.

lol

So does not having a thermostat installed in my car give me shitty gas milage?

Yes, when the car is cold it uses more fuel then when it operates at normal operating temps.

Stupid question, but did you install it where you THINK there's supposed to be a thermostat? For example, I thought the thermostat was in the front top hose on the Accord, and tore that whole thing apart, before realizing it's actually in the back.

i doubt that, there is no way a thermostat would fit on the other water neck.

Mario - To answer your question I'll take a pic when I get home to show you where I installed it.

Well what 2gencrx makes sense, it's been a while since I've worked on a d-series. I just remember my Accord tripped me out to open what I thought housed the thermostat and it was empty lol.

Don't mind the red circles, I took the pictures from a DIY thread at Honda-Tech.

Ok this is where it is on my car:

This is what it was suppose to look like when I took the cover off:

But this is what it looked like when I actually took the cover off for the first time:

That's where it should be.

Yup then there wasn't a thermostat there before I installed one.
