View Full Version : Bad car or radio?

I got this Clarion CD player from a guy I used to work with. It is pretty new and everything and it works great except for one thing. It will not play cd's when my car is running. If I have it on auxillary, it will play just fine; but after I start the car, more often than not, it will not continue playing a cd.

If I do miraclously get it to play while I am driving, and someone wants to listen to another CD, or pause it, they can just forget it because it's not gonna happen. I installed it myself, and everything seemed easy enough and to work fine, but the problem just got worse and worse.

Recap: got a cd player for my car. Works perfect when the key is turned on. Once the car is running it WILL NOT :guns: play a cd, it will play the radio though. I asked an installer a Best Buy and he said to hook a multimeter up to the power wire and check the voltage. He says it sounds like a problem with the car. Any thoughts? "usuk:

hrmm..sounds like it could be getting noise back into the player somehow. I've never seen anything like that before...where did you take the power/ground wires from..anything that may be getting a signal back from the engine bay?

Hard to say about these things...sounds like the player is working fine to me as well.

All I did was get a wiring harness from Circuit City for a Clarion head unit, then I just plugged all the wires togther, nothing left over. It's not like static or anything, it just simply will not play. It usually gives me a CD ERROR 6 reading, and sometimes a CD ERROR 3 reading, but since I don't have any of the original paper work I have no idea what that means.

That sounds like its internal in the head unit. Especially since its giving you error codes.

Maybe that's why he sold it to you in the first place...

Actually I was a lot tech and we used to get stuff out of junkers sometimes, so he nevver actually had it in his car, so he didn't know.

man im stumped. only 2 things i can think of you said you got a plug for a clarion. did you mean a wireing harness for the car and then matched all the wire colors to the clarion plug?
if you got a clarion plug and plugged it into the cd player there is a chance not all the wires were in the same position.

or you have some really bad vibration in the dash or a wireing harness of some kind that is causing interference.

or possibly you have about the worst luck and happend to get 2 defective cd players that do the exact same thing.

What do you mean by this?

I did get a wiring harness for the Clarion into my car and everything hooked up fine. But don't worry about this to much fellas, as I have more important things to worry about, like paying $1295 for a tranny rebuild that acts the exact same as before they "rebuilt" it!!!!!

That sucks, who did it for you, I'm looking for a new tranny soon as well. I'd rather get a new one over getting a rebuild.

All Japanese engine and transmission. Here's the down low. I took it in and the guy wrote down, "bearings and synchros" estimate $1295. So I take it in, and the mechanic says that the bearings were all messed up so he bought all new bearings and put them in. He also said that the synchros looked fine. (152,000 miles on the car) I was like great. So I pick up the car and it starts to pop out of gear a lot, like really a lot (fourth gear). I also had a hard time getting it into reverse. So I take it back. After a tear down the mechanic tells me that the reverse synchro went bad and that was what caused the tranny to pop out of gear.

So, I take it back and it takes freakin for ever to get it back again. The owner tells me to take the car on a test drive, before I even get out of the parking lot I hear that good old fucked up bearing sound again. I brought it back in and he was like, "damn, sounds like it fucked up more bearings, but heey what can you do?"

At first I was like yeah that sucks, but now I'm more like, maybe you should have fixed it right the first time. So now I have to take it back again. But first I am going to have it diagnosed by some other shops and have them write down the problems. I know what they will say "Needs bearings and synchros." Then I will go to the shop and say, he look at these papers, isn't this what I paid $1295 for, why isn't it fixed? Sorry for the long post.

you know i had a 93 civic once that had bad bearings in the trans, the sound it made was kind of like a rattle sound that was rythmic and it was in all gears. i did not have any problems with it popping out or gear but it cost me like 550 to have them replace the bearings. i pulled the tranny myself saving me a few hunderd for R and R. i took it to colorado transmissions on garden of the gods. i know you live in golden so not very feasable for you but i agree 100% it sounds like some really crappy work. if you paid that much money they should have rebuilt the whole damn thing.

This is a really old post. I never had to deal with either of these problems (tranny or radio) because the cars was totalled. However, if it's easy enough to remove your radio, might I suggest trying to find a reset button? Otherwise I have no idea. Good luck though.

Wiring is wiring. If it works when the car is on acc, it should work with the engine running bottom line. if the connections are secure enough to play it all the time when it isn't on, the connections are secure enough to play when the engine is running.

My thoughts exactly. Cheapest and best thing to do would be to get a new head unit.
