Good way to go. It's freakin expensive now. It cost me $114 just for doing it all online and sending it via e-file. $75 for Premium, $35 for state and sales tax.
I remember 3 or 4 years ago, Turbotax only cost me $20 for the fed.

Yeah, it cost me $45 for TurboTax Deluxe + $36 to file federal and state. I think they're trying to get people to switch to TurboTax Online, which is cheaper, but I still prefer the CD version. Speaking of which, Walmart is apparently not carrying the Deluxe version this year... they show it on their website for $40, but when you go to the store, there's an empty shelf spot for it between the basic version and Premium. That was the case at the 4 Walmarts I went to (3 of them being Super Walmarts). I just ended up going to Target, who had plenty in stock.

I still like paying $130 to have my tax lady do them, it takes some stress out of my life :)

We did ours on Turbo Tax a month ago, got $4500.00 back from the IRS, and we owe the damn state $209.00..... I never in my life owed the state and now I do, what the hell is going on.

That seems weird.

Yeah, the state does things a little differently... I got $18 back from Federal and owed the State of Colorado $29. But I had over $10k in deductions, so I'm kind of not surprised that it worked out weird.

I agree with Stu whole heartedly. The accountant in me wants to whip out some time/value analysis of $4500 over the course of a year at equal installments with even a minimal rate... but my financial calculator is at work and I don't feel like trying to figure it out on my old TI-85.
Long story short, you'd rather have the money in your pocket when you get paid. Time is money - especially 2006.
See, I know all about that, but I wouldn't invest my money anyway, I'd just spend it (like most people) so even I would rather the government hold my money hostage from me. :)

Yup, even ignoring inflation, money today is worth more than the same amount of money tomorrow. This is why major corporations bust their asses to count as much revenue as possible before the end of each financial quarters. They even spend thousands of dollars to do it. It's what the shareholders want... more money today, not tomorrow. I personally got paid 18.75 hours of overtime last week because of it... of course, almost half of that OT pay went to taxes, even with me having 3 allowances on my W4

We got back from State last year and had to pay Federal like $500. We changed our deductions and this year we got money back from both.

I am getting back about $6k between state and fed. I need to adjust my W4 I guess. How do you figure out how much to adjust it w/o losing my ass next year?
