View Full Version : Cigarette Smokers
Im trying to kick the bad habbit, anybody else ready? Im thinking ill start next week.
I'm Kyle, and I've been smoking for 5 years. I tried quitting almost a year and a half ago, but only lasted a few days. I was using Nicorette Chewing gum. It's now 2007, $4,000+ lost to cigarette companys, not to mention my health.

I actually just quit 3 weeks ago and I feel great. Smoked for 6 years and just couldn't take it anymore. I hate waking up in the morning and not being able to breath because of some stupid habit that does nothing for you! I just hope I can keep this up and never smoke another cigarette again. I don't wanna die from this stupid shit!
nice man, thats good to hear! how did you quit? gum? patch? cold turkey?

I was going cold turkey for about the first week, then I went and bought some Commit lozenge's and those help pretty good. Just try to keep thinking how shitty they are and how bad they are for you and that alone will make you feel better.

Newt2 on this board went the patch route and has been cigarette free for almost a year after smoking for over 20 years.
I smoked for nearly 20 yrs, and when my wife got pregnant w/our first kid I quit. Once in awhile if I have too much to drink I smoke a cig, and wake up the next morning feeling as though a cat used my mouth for it's catbox.
Good for you - quitting is easy, just tell yourself that you quit.

just tell yourself that you quit.that is really the only condition.
If not ready, help it making an iron promise not to smoke ever before (let’s say) 5pm, e v e r. After weeks, you will be ready.

I quit over 2 years ago after smoking for only 3 years. I went to acupuncture because my parents said they'd pay for it. It seemed to help with my cravings and I wasn't very irriatable. But who knows, I think its pretty easy to do once you have seriously gotten sick of it.
Good luck with it!

:werd: It's the best decision I've made. I cant stand the smell of cigs now and hate to be around it. After people smoke, I dont want to get within a 5 ft radius of them bc of the smell.

I just told myself I was done, I was able to stay smoke free for over 7 months, then I started again. I am going to quit again here next week and never smoke again. I did it cold turkey last time and I am going to do it the same way as before.

All I'm gonna say is its all mental, if you let yourself think about it too long, your gonna want another one. Just keep it in your mind that you are done with smoking and how nasty and horrible it is. Also, keep your mind on other things, and if you see people smoking, ignore them, or just remind yourself that its a disgusting habit, and how its hurting their bodys. But good luck!

Good luck man.
I've got a buddy with a very addictive personality that used to smoke. He stopped, but now he avoids cigars as well so they won't tempt him.
hmm very intresting. i think ill try cutting back hardcore, and just try to phase them out. i dont want to spend more money on patches and gum because of my habit. thanks for the support guys

I tried the cutting back method a couple times and it never worked. I think you seriously have to go cold turkey. Get some tooth picks or something like that for the oral fixation part.
fuck, thats what ive tried to do. its so hard to just 'let it go' though. ill need to invest in some orbitz gum, or some hard candies.
Try sunflower seeds. If you get Spitz brand, they have much less salt (but still VERY tasty) so you can eat more without tearing your mouth up. However, I have to warn you, if you eat more than 1 bag, in one day, sunflower seeds will give you diarrhea.
You also might want to look into a cheap corn cob pipe to chew on. I used to have one at my desk at work until I chewed it apart.

Kio, it might work for you. It's just been my experience that people cut back for a week and then go right back to where they were.

I have smoked off and on mostly on for about 4 years. It honestly is a mind game, you really do feel that you have to have that cig, but, you really don't obviously. I have used every single excuse from being angry to wanting to take a shit before i went out (cig helped with that). I just started up again after stopping for a solid 4-5 months. Something i have found to truly help, which I will start on friday is this, set a day, could be 3 days or two weeks. That day will be the day that you do not wake up and spark that first smoke, having it in your head that "Im quitting" and you repeat it to yourself throughout the time period, puts you in the mind set, which in my opinion is HUGE. Also, something that i found very interesting and i noticed it when I quit a while ago is this. Ask your self what people who are non smokers do differnt then you? Answer: Absoltuly nothing, they go about their day doing the shit we do, but just don't have to step aside and have that smoke, or they don't need to set a time to go have that smoke. Hope this helps.

I'm 7 months out now from the last time I had one.
After about a month it got real easy because I noticed how bad the smell was on people who smoked. It's nice knowing you don't stink.
I used sunflower seeds, gum and I also kept a tooth brush in the truck. If the urge was bad enough... I brushed my teeth and that helped immensly!
Just keep smelling your clothes as you go along and think to youself...
"DAYUM... I smell good!"
I've heard that it helps to quit with someone, so you have a support group so to speak.
For example, if you and your spouse smoke, and only one of you wants to quit, it will be much harder than if you quit together.
Good luck, buddy. You can do it, daddy has faith in ya'. If you can't, we should go on a shooting spree in a tobacco industries coporate building. FTW? FTW indeed.
Tobacco companies didn't make him smoke, that's not fair to them. Even if they were ALL dead, he'd still be addicted to cigarettes. Don't go playing the blame game now, it's way too late for that.

Stu, I blame you for everything bad that has ever happened to me.
I've never once caused impotence.

Quitnet.com is a good resource. I have been smoking for 27 years yeah yeah I was 11 when I started I stopped twice, once for 15 months and the other time was only 3 months with the quit line. The quit line gives you free patches if you allow them to call and see how your quit is doing.
sut, thanks for the link. i might try that.

I would attribute that to the blistering cold, the blizzard conditions, and you're dumb ass locking us out of the cabin more than anything.

I hesitated to say that before,- best way in the world - get addicted to toothpaste! Forget getting addicted to anything instead (chew gum etc), this makes you still needing sth, don’t trick yourself, you need to get free from sh*t.
btw, few of my friends spending time with me last years quitted smoking, though I never even suggested them to do so (I don’t care :p ;) )
