Seems like you'd be paying a lot of money for the looks... there are plenty of good helmets with the same Snell rating for hundreds of dollars less.

since you are a new rider, how comfortable are you on the bike? Keep in mind helmets are worthless if you even just drop them. So if you lay it down and smack your head once its done. Might just want to start with something cheap

Go to a bike shop and see what they have first and test fit them.

They may have a helmet there you like that's around 100$.

That is a nice helmet.... but 400$? Dayum!

Decent regular HJC's go for about $75 to $150 depending on style's, that is what i have, and it works fine and it didnt cost me what a pipe for my bike would.

Try Performance Cycle on Broadway and Evans they have a good selection of helmets there

With helmets; keep in mind that cheap=heavy, and in the long run, your neck can't handle that. I tend to go with more expencive helmets because of weight, comfort, and safety. Looks shouldn't be part of your price consideration, you can definietly have them painted.

That's where I bought my Shark helmet.

Thats why I wear Arai. I've had cheaper helmets then upgraded to the top models (ie. Shoie X-11 and Arai RX7 Corsair) and now I can't wear anything less.

How do you like the Shark? I've been thinking about getting one and see how it compares with Arai RX7.

I've been really pleased with it/ It vents really well even at low speed, and the design prevents it from "shimmying" at higher speed. It's not terribly heavy, either.

With purchasing helmets, and besides the extra cost of certain graphics/replicas, you should always buy the best helmet you can afford. Once your in the higher quality helmets, then you choose comfort/fit, noise (wind) that you can bear with, venting, etc.

Not saying HJC's are bad, just one of the helmets that I would prefer to stay away from for long rides or track time. Again, that's just my personal opinion, the Suomy, Shark, Arai, Shoei to me have a much better fit and finish, feel much better wearing, depending on what your after, vent better, wind noise is dependant on venting. Plus aerodynamics in the wind while your riding.....the infamous buffeting.

Just get one thats snell approved. . And theres a sticker you can stick onto the helmet to let you know if its still good. By that i mean every time you drop your helmet it wears it down, sorta say. And what the sticker does is it indicate how well it will still protect your noggin after being banged around or whatnot. When buying a helmet, i personally think its all about comfort, next to protection. See how you like the fit first before you buy. One that can change visors is another option for you. I like one that can. I can change it to clear for night and chromed tinted for day to block out sun.

Most won't do this but if you ever drop your helmet, you should swap it out. Even if it's a light drop let's say from sitting on the bike and it drops off the side.

I wear an AGV on the street and a Simpson on the dirt.

And get a jacket. I lucked out with when I dropped the bike on the highway but I got some pretty scary tears in my jacket that could have easly been broken ribs or worse. I always wear my Helmet now. Also some helmets make weird drag. Get a rounded back you can look left and right when riding. My helmet has a small tale and you notice that real quick.

Hope he didn't drop his lid. I would never trust a used helmet.
