I got a bad sunburn at Bandimere last summer. YES, I did use sunscreen but I missed 2 small portions on my shoulders. Needless to say, you can still see where I got burned and it looks scarred. My sister in law (who is a nurse) told me to try Mederma (which is an ointment that needs to be applied 3-4 times a day for 3-6 months) and Aloe lotion and that after time that should help it. It might even possibly go away someday, or at least look a lot better.
Well, I was just talking to a lady at work and she said that skin damage is forever and there's nothing I can do about it. It will always be there... NO MATTER WHAT. She said "it might look better after time, but you will always see it"
What do you guys think? Have you ever gotten a bad burn and had it go away after a year or two? What are your experiences?
I guess I shouldn't listen to the lady at work because she's always negative about EVERYTHING so I figured I'd get some more input.
Next time, I'm bathing in sunscreen... =(

I don't really know about sun burns, but I wouldn't think they'd be all that bad... I've had several scars from injuries that just faded away over the years. I can still see some of them if I look closely, but it seems that they do go away, just very slowly.
I had a line on my head where I was burned when wearing a hat for a while. I wouldn't listen to some cranky old cougar though. Your skin is constantly regenerating and it should clear up. It could also just be a pigmentation change. I've developed a few of those that really only show up if I get a tan. Even then, they don't ALWAYS show up.
In my completely inexperienced opinion, I'd say, "no."

I'll just keep using my "mederma" and hope for the best =) I'm in a wedding in August and don't want my shoulders looking like crap nor do I want permanent skin damage

I got so sun burned one time that I had blisters, it did do a little damage at first, scared and stuff, but within a year or so it all went away, you can't even tell now, of course this was 15 years ago but still....
I've been burned with blisters many times. One time I got blisters on my face so bad, that I stayed out of school for an entire week. If you look at me now, I'm fucking gorgeous.

it doesn't hurt to get it checked out...
i had a mole on my toe that just appeared, the doc thought it was Melanoma. Did some lab test, and it turned out to be nothing.
i'm sure you have health insurance, i would get it checked out. If its nothing, you are cool... but it might be something that needs attention

my experience says it will be there for a while. i got a bad burn with some cooking oil like a year ago. while it isn't as visible it is still there. once scar tissue is there its hard to get rid of with out lasers and shit

Yes - skin damage is not something which ever fully recovers.

"Skin Damage" is a blanket term. I've gotten burned a lot (cars and whatnot) and sunburned even more (boats and whatnot) and I've got very few scars from the hot-object burnage and none from the sun burnage.
Get some of Watkin's salve stuff in the tin. I used that on surgery scars and abbrasion scars, even one where I got my dirtbike footpegs ripped into my leg. Works marvelously. I think the Mederma stuff will help too, because that's for stimulationg the hypodermic layer of your skin. But if it doesn't, go Watkins.

I think I get more scars from not cleaning the cut out or not taking care of it or picking at the scab. I have never had permanent scars from the sun. Yes it looks pink for a while but it goes away. I use to live in the sun.

it depends on skin pigmentation;
amount of pigment = ability of protecting from sun damage; blonde-haired person can have it damaged easier, but don’t worry - after damaged – cells of our skin regenerate in time. I’ve heard, entire our skin (all its cells) is being rebuilt all after each 8 years (except cells damaged too much, to get rebuilt); while aging, skin loses this ability, especially fragile one, like women have usually.
You Tiffany don’t worry, you are young :_) so your skin got ability to regenerate partially – damaged cells. Of course, keep helping this.
So see you with baby-skin on you shoulders :

I have been burnt bad, about 15yrs ago and my skin never healed, still discolored.
Also a couple of years ago I had a malignant melanoma removed and now have a huge scar where a lot of my upper arm was removed, so wear sunscreen!

Yeah, depending on person /skin type, it might be not /not fully recovered,
Colorado sun is pretty intensive
In my country, people use.. buttermilk on _fresh_ sunburned skin, it helps magically!

It really can depend on how fair skinned you are. However you can do permenant damage to skin cells in the case of a bad sunburn. And it is possible that while it may seem to get better, it will probably stay with you for a few years and possibly forever.

I don't have real fair skin, so hopefully this goes away within a year or two. =) No more sun for me... >:(

Some people are right here, it really does depend on many factors such as how fair skinned you are, and your exposure rate over a given amount of time. Some skin damage may not appear after it happens, but there are some cases where it pops up later down the road in the form of melanoma(sp?) or patchy pigmentation.
However I will say that I have literally seen sun damaged skin just completely disappear via laser peel. Thats where they take a laser and burn off a layer or 2 of skin.
