Sorry for the novel...
On My way to work today I pull onto highway 287 noticing a state trooper eyeing my ass for no front plate. I proceed on, hoping that he will let it be but he pulls out to pull me over. He proceeds to pull me over as figured, walks up to the window as I state, "let me guess, no front plate?" he agrees and asks for the usual documents. He walks back to the bike, writes me a warning then notices that I am missing the VIN on my dash. The second he notices that, I tell him that it didn't come on the dash when I bought it. He immediatly turns and walks away as another state patrol car pulls up behind him.
They both walk up ask me to pop my hood. I do so and get out of the car, i show that the VIN on the firewall matches my registration, and that the vin on my block and tranny match, as well as came out of a totalled GSR, Not a theft recovery. It just so happens that the guy in the car was the State VIN Inspector of Colorado, or one of them, and he obviously knows all about stolen hondas. So he writes everything down, asks me if I want a state VIN inspection here and now (if i have 20) or else they will IMPOUND my car....! (it was also a big deal that he was going to do it right there and now) He also notes that my car should have airbags, obviously missing, new dash didn't have a pass one and my sterring wheel is aftermarket. I tell him I pulled all the wiring out for the SRS so there isn't any danger. He feels that he can't do a VIN inspection with out the air bags... I continue to visualize my car being pulled onto a flat bed. So the inspector walks back to his car to pull all the VINS and proceed with the inspection.
I sit back in my car and continue to talk with the Motorcycle cop that orginally pulled me over, he claims that this car is highly illegal, modified exhaust, suspension, header (turbo mani) on and on and on... I continue to tell him that I have had this car forever, lots of money tied up, yada yada and that I really don't want it to be impounded. He says that he doesn't think that is going to happen and to sit tight. State inspector comes back up I get out, he asks if the car has ever been in an accident, or has a salvaged title... I claim no, just been hit here and there back in the day. He gives me the paperwork to have my car retagged, and leaves. I think part of the reason they let me go was because I was honest about what I had changed, straight forward about everything that was there. And more than willing to let them look over my car.
Moral of the story, VINS are important! If you don't have one on your dash, I would go to the DMV to have your car retagged! Also don't buy stolen shit! Especailly motors/tranny's with missing VINS. Thank god I have mine or shit would have gone sour real fast! Be respectful and it just might get you off one day. I later learned that he came to look because he heard high profile honda that was pulled over.
Cliffs: Pulled over for no front plate, cop noticed no VIN on dash, car almost impounded, road side vin inspection, pray to god.
Thanks for reading! Be smart out there if you value your investment as much as I do.
