Sorry for the novel...

On My way to work today I pull onto highway 287 noticing a state trooper eyeing my ass for no front plate. I proceed on, hoping that he will let it be but he pulls out to pull me over. He proceeds to pull me over as figured, walks up to the window as I state, "let me guess, no front plate?" he agrees and asks for the usual documents. He walks back to the bike, writes me a warning then notices that I am missing the VIN on my dash. The second he notices that, I tell him that it didn't come on the dash when I bought it. He immediatly turns and walks away as another state patrol car pulls up behind him.

They both walk up ask me to pop my hood. I do so and get out of the car, i show that the VIN on the firewall matches my registration, and that the vin on my block and tranny match, as well as came out of a totalled GSR, Not a theft recovery. It just so happens that the guy in the car was the State VIN Inspector of Colorado, or one of them, and he obviously knows all about stolen hondas. So he writes everything down, asks me if I want a state VIN inspection here and now (if i have 20) or else they will IMPOUND my car....! (it was also a big deal that he was going to do it right there and now) He also notes that my car should have airbags, obviously missing, new dash didn't have a pass one and my sterring wheel is aftermarket. I tell him I pulled all the wiring out for the SRS so there isn't any danger. He feels that he can't do a VIN inspection with out the air bags... I continue to visualize my car being pulled onto a flat bed. So the inspector walks back to his car to pull all the VINS and proceed with the inspection.

I sit back in my car and continue to talk with the Motorcycle cop that orginally pulled me over, he claims that this car is highly illegal, modified exhaust, suspension, header (turbo mani) on and on and on... I continue to tell him that I have had this car forever, lots of money tied up, yada yada and that I really don't want it to be impounded. He says that he doesn't think that is going to happen and to sit tight. State inspector comes back up I get out, he asks if the car has ever been in an accident, or has a salvaged title... I claim no, just been hit here and there back in the day. He gives me the paperwork to have my car retagged, and leaves. I think part of the reason they let me go was because I was honest about what I had changed, straight forward about everything that was there. And more than willing to let them look over my car.

Moral of the story, VINS are important! If you don't have one on your dash, I would go to the DMV to have your car retagged! Also don't buy stolen shit! Especailly motors/tranny's with missing VINS. Thank god I have mine or shit would have gone sour real fast! Be respectful and it just might get you off one day. I later learned that he came to look because he heard high profile honda that was pulled over.

Cliffs: Pulled over for no front plate, cop noticed no VIN on dash, car almost impounded, road side vin inspection, pray to god.

Thanks for reading! Be smart out there if you value your investment as much as I do.

Good post. Most people don't worry too much about VIN violations, but the truth is that they are generally felonies, so you really have to be careful. CSP always seems to take a look at VIN's when they pull Hondas and Acuras over, as they should.

My dad was driving my car yesterday and got pulled over for no front plate. They must have been told to pull people over for this, this month. Gives them a reason to make contact and check out the car. Glad it worked out for you Pete!

Weston, I read that post where you went into the felony for a Vin. It has been on my mind since then. Now I have to get my car re tagged and will be legit. Glad about that.

Hung it was at 9:00, 287 and 144th. Same cop im sure.

Trust me, i was SHITTING my pants. Over all, I don't look down on the experince what so ever. It happened for a reason, I learned a lesson, thankful to be let off, and the cops overall were super cool. I'm just happy I didnt have to watch my slammed honda get scraped all over attempting to be pulled on a flat bed.

Pete, that sucks. But this is part of the reason why I leave my front and rear plates on. Without one it gives a cop another reason to pull you over.

+1.

I left it off my 900 because I didn't want to drill holes in a rare, new-old-stock factory body kit. I'd like to run the Viggen without one, but I have so much contempt for law enforcement anymore that I'll uglify the front of my car to aviod contact with them.

Good to see that the cops are actually on top of that shit (the stolen parts thing). Here in Florida they don't give a fuck.

But most of the time it is pointless to have a front license plate becuase if your car is lowered then the plate isn't regulation. Its supposed to be so high of the ground and even some stock cars don't meet that qualification. The reason I took mine off so i can fight it better in court and say its on their now. But at least cops are finally getting getting on top of douches stealing cars.

I know your headlights have to be a certain height off the ground, but I was not aware that your plate had to be. Do you have any details (read: links) about this?

it was stated above. 144th and highway 287ish.

How did she act? I always hear people say how all cops are dicks. Maybe its just me but they are always pretty cool to me. I think its being respectful in the first place instead of being a smartass. I have had some that are worse than others, but these two were pretty cool. He seemed to think that he might tag me with all kinds of shit. Lowered, illegal exhaust (CARB approved in Cali) no air bags.

You wanna "move in" so you have NE plates. My friend who lives in Westminster did that for a couple years after he moved from NE to there. Cops couldnt do anything to him with his Del Sol.

Oh, i think plates, and such are cheaper here, and NO smog!

Thanks for the link, I can't believe they have to be 12" off the ground. I think even some stock cars may be lower than this.

thing is, i have my VIN from my old dash with rivets glued in, i used to just leave it there for instances like this. One of the rivets fell out so I knew it looked to obvious so I took it out until i could find another rivet and this happened. It was a pretty scary experience. But all in all Karma was on my side today. I try to keep it that way.

EDIT: If it doesn't look ghetto i think he will be fine Erin.

I got pulled over for the same thing about two weeks ago, up at 128th and Hazel. I pulled up to a red light, and a passing cop stops, even at the green light. So I knew I was going to get pulled over and I knew what it was for. The cops have been onto checking VINs, because I noticed that when he asked for license and registration, he ran his flashlight over my vin through the windshield, and I knew exactly what he was doing. Anyway Pete glad to hear that your situation turned out good.

Man,from '94-'01 I was pulled over at least 16 times and never had a plate on the front of my Eclipse and it was never pointed out by the Po-Po;I usually was issued a speeding ticket and went on my way. This included the time I was clocked at 123 on C470 and was let go with a 19mph over ticket.

she has loud ass exaust too but they didn't say nothing. she just explained to him that the car didn't come with a place for one in the front and he bitched her out about how she needs to put a few holes in the bumper so she had one there. i guess she acted nice. he was a dick though.

Yeah I put a new dash in my car and just put screws in it to keep the vin on but now I think that I should re-rivet it so it looks stock.
