Use the vtec studs, or your b16, or aftermarket b16 ones

hey Ted I thought you were supposed to use the studs that match the block i.e. gsr and type-r head studs are the same even though they use different head castings. They have to go deeper into the block to get a good bite. The block itself is taller so it needs a longer stud.
It shouldn't make a difference how tall the block is, only how tall the head is.

Head casting thicknesses are the same for both GSR and B16 heads the deck is taller and the threads are deeper in the block so you can use both but if you want a reliable motor that wont blow head gaskest every other week use the LS studs. Also keep in mind that when you use aftermarket head studs you need to torque the head studs down to something like 85 flbs but check the manufacturers specs. or you will still blow head gaskets and might also warp your head.

You use B18C studs for an LS VTEC setup. The heads are the same from B16 to B18 but the taller B18 deck requires the studs to be longer. The holes are deeper. We have the GSR studs in stock if you need some Eric Garcia.

I see what you are sayin I'm just sayin if you are going to hang a 400 lb mirror on the wall you are gonna want the biggest friggin screw you can find so that it doesnt fall on your foot! B16s will work but the GSRs work better especialy when boosting. You want as much as you can get to hold down the head even if it is only another 1/2 inch of thread. Just more reliable for a DD.

i wasn't going to hijack this thread, but my question is almost the same as erik's and it sounds like he already got his answer.
my current motor is a GSR bottom end with a B16 head, and it already had ARP studs in it when i got it. not sure which ones they are.
im switching to a GSR head, and need to make sure i have the correct head studs for my setup.
previously i was always under the impression that you bought them to match the head... meaning i should currently have B16 studs, and need GSR head studs... but if i understand this thread then you actually buy them for the block, which means i should already have the correct studs?
just wanted to double check before i try to assemble this thing.

Yes you are right you buy the head studs for the block and yes you should have the right studs already.... unless.... someone gave the previous owner the wrong info. only way to tell is to compare to a set of the right ones or measure if you know the right specs. I'm not sure of the specs. off hand but I'll see if can find it in my library.

I have a question that is kinda relating this thread... Is it possible to use gsr head bolts on a LS motor?

I Believe the LS requires Longer head bolts or vise versa.

LMAO! Can use gsr on Ls-TEC only! LS head casting is taller the LS studs are longer because of this and the GSR's wont grab enough thread to keep the head pulled down tight enough. (wondering how many ppl have the wrong head studs in their cars...no wonder I fix so many blown head gaskets)

My friend took apart his B18C1 and put together a Full LS and the headstuds that were in the LS were longer than the Vtec ones on the GSR :/ can someone verify that. or did he just buy his GSR with B16 studs? the guy he bought it from pieced it together.

For those that are either too lazy or dumb to read the begining of this thread... B16 studs are the shortest, GSR and ITR studs are next in length, and LS are the longest and each one gets longer by about a 1/2 inch. Ls-Tec requires GSR's and otherwise you match your studs to the block.
