View Full Version : TC's Hellement: "Element of suprise"
HONDA GHANDI
01-27-2007, 12:50 PM
Well after a year of speculation and decision making, we finally decided to go forth with the turbo project for the shop truck, Honda Element. We initially decided that we would supercharge the already stout K24. But at Sema this year it was brought to our attention at the Hondata seminar that the K-Pro could be modified to use in the Element. After bugging them for a year and a half our dreams finally came true. So this is the first installment of our project. We plan to have the turbo kit finished and installed and ready to race by March 17th. The NOPI season opener at Phoenix raceway. (That's only 6 weeks folks!)
So here it goes. The parts required to install a K-Pro on an 03-06 MT Element:
1. RSX-S ECU 02-04
2. Hondata Adapter harness
3. Hondata K-Pro
4. RSX-S wideband oxygen sensor
At first I thought the K-Pro install would be as easy as an RSX or EP3. I was not so lucky. The ECU sizes are slightly different, as well as the bracketry that mounts them in the dash. Here is a quick pic of the RSX-S ECU required to run the E with a K-pro next to the stock Element ECU.
As you can see the rsx ecu is slightly shorter in size and has different mounting points. These mounting tabs are the reason for me modifying the stock Element case to accept the rsx ecu board and K-Pro. The RSX ECU wont fit into the slot where the stock ecu came out of on the Element.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,172.html
Now, more issues. The stock Element case is longer and has different mounting spots to mount to the case itself. The RSX holes DO NOT line up.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,175.html
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,173.html
The screw that mounts the K-Pro to the board is the only hole that is correct. So some things are going ok at this point. I elongated two of the holes to make it so that I could screw the board to the case securely.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,174.html
But do NOT elongate and screw down the hole in this pic. The screw will make contact with a power tab section of the board and short it to the case. This can cause serious board damage and possibly engine/K-Pro damage!! As you can see in the pic, the metal power tab part of the board is sitting right where a screw would go to the left of the heat sink.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,175.html
Now that I have that all taken care of, I move on to the USB port notch. Easy enough right? Wrong. There is a steel bracket in the dash that holds the ECU. It will need to be removed and notched as well as the case. The USB port faces forward directly into the firewall so it will need to be installed as the ECU is installed and left in there. Your tuner will love you for this step, trust me. Here are a few pics of the ECU case, with and without notch. And the bracket installed and notched.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,176.html
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,177.html
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,171.html
Now the ECU part is done, install it into the dash as you removed it, with out course making sure that the USB cable is attached, and routed so that it wont be pinched or kinked. Install the adapter harness carefully and make sure that it is secured. It takes some work to make it clear the glove box but it can be done.
Install the RSX-S wideband oxygen sensor (primary) and you are ready to tune. I installed the TSX basemap into mine and the car fired right up. Next stop on this little journey is the manifold construction and installation. We have decided on a tubular manifold, T3-T04E .57 trim turbo with a .63 exhaust housing. Air to water inter-cooler (for lack of room for a decent front mount) and 850CC injectors. We plan on revisiting the tune this season with some E-85 supplements as the project progresses. If you have any questions I can be reached here: tobi@tcperf.com
Thanks and stay tuned!

Where are you going to mount your water reservior? This is a FWD Element correct? I can't imagine making the AWD one put up with much additional power....but you are teh Ghandi! What power and times are you shooting for? Good luck on having a sweet, different drag car!

damn sounds really interesting1 keep putting pics up of your process :)
Sounds like a fun little project. Hope to see you down at Phoenix with us. Will you be trailering it down, or driving it if it's ready in time?

its about time you made the Hellement into a quicker shitbox. NOPI won't be ready for something so unusual.

Mind if I cross post this on automotivearena.com?
any plans for a K20a2 or K20a head?
HONDA GHANDI
01-28-2007, 08:22 AM
For sure Brian.
Eventually it will get a type S head and sleeved built block and bigger turbo.
After this is done I have two other parties interested in the same thing. both are 4x4s. So we will see what the stock drivetrain can handle. It is much beefier than the previous 4x4 setups honda had. The original post will be updated as I go, so just keep watching your e-mail for updates.

01-28-2007, 08:24 AM
but even then tobi... isnt the 4x4 ones just drive shafts and standard diffs?
think it would be pretty easy to get custom shafts for that although expensive. and "queef" im sure is up to making monsta diffs for ya.
HONDA GHANDI
01-28-2007, 08:26 AM
Its still a aux shaft off the front diff. Its a 70/30 torque split. Front axles and tranny are good to 500whp proven, so the rear diff is the only questionable issue at this point.

anything for the RDX? :D
Probably nothing except a reflash in the future. ALl the drive by wire stuff is causing problems in the aftermarket world. Stuff like the UTEC will be needed to run those cars.

The turbo project is well under way. Here are a few snaps of what we have done in the last week and a half to get you up to speed. Progress should be fast from here on out so be patient with updates.
For the intercooler to fit I had to relocate the battery and fuse box. This is also for a cleaner look under the hood. Here is the mock up of the battery tray.

Me welding up the last runner on the manifold...
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,206.html
Here is the manifold after coating. We went with a higher temp coating this time that is a little more expensive but the finish is incredible...

http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,205.html
Here is the aftercooler chilling (haha) in its final resting place. Just need to weld up some brackets....

Lookin' good, Tobi. Out of curiousity, who did your coating? Any effects on the manifold as far as you know other than lower hoods temps? More prone to cracking due to more trapped in heat? Etc.
That's gonna be one fun element :D

It keeps more heat in the manifold and turbo which helps spool times. It wont cause it to crack, poor welds do that. This one is my first so we will see if it cracks or not (fingers crossed)
Well I knew it helped spool them.. I learned that with this log manifold. More heat = better sp00lage... but I was more concerned about the cracking. Good to know, though. :)

Updates for Feb. 15, 2007.
Today went well, I am feeling much better and got a lot more done today than yesterday.
I got the transmission out, the 6speed conversion done, The Phantom grip installed in the diff, the turbo assembly done and installed with most of the oil lines done.
Here is a pic of the trans before teardown, Looks a bit strange compared to the RSX/EP3 trannies. LOL.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,211.html
Here is a pile of the parts needed to do the 6 speed conversion. I planned on doing this a while ago and doing a write up on this alone but, there is a keen fellow over at www.elementownersclub.com that beat me to it. Cheers buddy, thanks for the write up.
If you are interested in doing this to your element please feel free to PM me or call us at the shop. This is not a job for the do it yourself'r by the way.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,212.html
Here is what the internals look like before and after....
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,213.html
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,214.html
Here is what the shift fork assemblies should look like after the job is done.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,215.html
And for future reference, the RSX-S diff is the same as the element with one slight difference. There is no boss for the 02-04 speed sensor ring. The E uses a mainshaft driven speed sensor similar to the 05+ RSX. So the quaife will drop right in for those of you wanting to get rid of that pesky one tire fire business on the 2wd E.
Here is a pic of the turbo assembly all ready to go to into the car...
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,216.html
Here is a pic of the unit all bolted into its permanent home. I measured the oil feed hose incorrectly and made a hose about 3/4 of an inch too short so I have to make another one tomorrow. That and I broke the mainshaft bearing on the tranny taking it off (oops) so when that shows up tomorrow on the overnight truck I will put the tranny back in and start on fabbing the drain tube, turbo feed pipe and intercooler pipe. All thats left is fuel pump, injectors, a litte wiring, the rest of the intercooler seetup and tuning! HooRay!
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,217.html
Stay tuned!!!1

OK, Update for February 17, 2007. I didnt get a whole lot more done on it in the last couple of days. Stupid work is getting in the way :P . I did however finish the tranny build and installed it with a ACT Clutch and flyeheel. I finalized the turbo assembly and installation with new oil feed and return lines, Seen here:
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,218.html
Here is a good shot of how much room there is left on the right hand side, There is plenty of room between the axle and turbo and still a lot of room between the VTEC solonoid and wastegate. From the looks of it you can almost change the wastegate spring through the wheel well without taking it off, we will see though. Hopefully I wont have to try it.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,219.html
Monday if I have time I will install the subframe and begin fabrication of the charge pipes, BOV installation and plumbing, Injector install and whatever else I can get to. After that there will not be any updates until the following Monday. I need to do some training classes and wont be able to finish this up. It should only take me a couple of more days to get this thing done and on the dyno. Is there a pool going yet to see how much power this is going to make?

Looks dope, So you are intercooling it as well as after cooling? Is this something that usually goes hand in hand, or unique to this aplication?
EDIT: Just reread. Very cool. I wasn't aware you could do both..
HONDA GHANDI
02-19-2007, 02:57 PM
Er, its not an intercooler. It is an air/water aftercooler. The front mount cools the water after it has been through the aftercooelr assembly. It doesnt directly cool the air charge.

http://www.highaltitudeimports.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3573&d=1172710200
Inside the cooler for those wondering, I used 25 feet of 1/2 inch aluminim tubing. I bent it to follow the contours of the
cooler. This system is a closed system so it wont spill or contaminate anything I put in the cooler (i.e. Beer, er sodas, candy bars etc.)

Although I feel grateful that you are risking your sweet hot ass in Iraq for my freedom, I already paid for that. Uncle sam took his cut and I think you got the shaft. As far as the advertising goes, I have yet to get a call from Derkaderkastan for any parts. So there you go...

Well our first outing to the track went better than expected. We took the Hellement to Phoenix AZ for the NOPI drag event at Firebird raceway.
After a lot of dirty looks and snickers we actually became a fan and racer favorite after just a couple of runs. People came over to the pits to have a look under the hood. They couldn't believe that a 3500lb SUV could take off so fast!
We missed the qualifying by one position in Turbo Street class so we got bumped to the 14.99 and faster bracket class. 5 rounds later, viola! A win for the turbo element!!
Our fastest time for the weekend was 13.88 @ 102 mph. With some timing issues figured out it ran strongly most of the weekend in the low 14s and high 13s. Now I just need to find a way to get this thing to hook up in low gear and low 13s are within reach.
Thanks to everyone who helped, Mike, Josh, Natalie, Hung, Seth, Steve, and Courtney. Here is the video of the fastest run of the weekend.

The next mod is an E-85 conversion and more boost. After that, RSX cylinder head, internals, and MORE boost.

i read some of this thread but i don't have the time to read it all so this might have been covered. if so sorry.
I understand the enjoyment of having six gears but from what I know having more gears when the car is built for draging is accually a bad thing. Usually most cars that are bumped up to six gears instead of five just get an extra gear inbetween 2nd and 3rd and are not accually needed. They will change 2nd and third gear slightly so there is less of an over lap, but the other gears stay the same. I have also driven my sisters RSX and RSX-S and found that the top gear and 1st gear are the same. So when you run 1/4 miles you accually have to shift and extra time and therefor run slower times. I am no expert but I would think that keeping only 5 gears is a good idea.
What is your take on this? Is the tranny better with 6 gears?
HONDA GHANDI
07-11-2007, 03:36 PM
Wha? How can top gear and first gear be the same. Please elaborate.
Cliff notes on this thread. I added a 6th gear to a 5 speed tranny. 1st-5th stay the same. The Element 5 speed trans has a 4.78 final drive ratio making 5th gear cruising unbearable due to the high RPMs. Also mileage is a concern.
I think he meant to say that 1st gear and fifth gear are the same between the two transmissions, and only 2,3,4, and 6 are different. Or something.

I ment top gear. 5th gear on the RSX and 6th on the RSX-S. they both put me at the same rmps at highway speed.
