The 4.0 is an inline 6, not a V6 and it is a very good motor. Sounds like an ok deal.

i thought all older grand cherokees came with either a dana 44 or 35 rear and all had 30s in the front.

You can pick up cherokee's really cheap. Some mildly built ones go for 2-3k. The wranglers are usually more expensive. Auto vs Manual is just a personal preferance. Also, the 4.0's are good motors and are cheap if you blow the motor. Ask me how I know. ;)

Grand Cherokees weren't made til 93 noob and none were ever manual tranny equipped. Well there were those other old ass "Grand" cherokee chiefs but I highly doubt he's talking about one of those. He's probably referring to a regular cherokee and yeah, 30 front, 35 rear.

Check Colorado4x4.org for some rigs. They usually have some decent ones on there. I'm not a cherokee expert but I know of 4.0's that have almost 300k miles on them. It's all hit and miss. Some last forever and some don't.

www.naxja.org is a good source for XJ (cherokee) information. I believe all Cherokees (except older ones) have a D30 front axle, and either a D44 (older ones), a D35, or a Chrysler 8.25 rear axle.
From everything I've read the 4.0 is just getting broken in around 200K miles. :D
Proper maintenance and they will last a long time. That is if you keep the water out of it...

www.jeepsunlimited.com is another good site. My 4.0 just turned 220k miles, boosted for the last 18k miles, has perfect compression, burns no oil, runs excellent. Take care of it and it'll take care of you.

Look underneath the thing and see if it's scratched to shit. That would mean it's been wheeled a lot.
Just look for basic stuff. Does it start easily? Does it idle and accelerate properly? Heat/AC working?
There's way too many things to go through. Just use common sense along with what you are willing to do to it later on.

well theres alot for starters they stopped puttin d44's in fsj in 1980 in the cherokees after that they came with either the d35 or chrysler 8.25 and a 30 front but they are also unibody . but wranglers pres 87 came with d30 front and d35 rear with a 3-speed or 4-speed but the ones made after 99 they can be automatic or manual its rare to find a wrangler automatic before that but cherokees arent to bad the body can flex bout 3 inches and you wont mess up the unibody but you wont need more than a 4-in. lift and your set run 33's andoff you go just be careful with that unibody

That may very well be the most grammatically incorrect paragraph ever written by a human being. That is assuming it's in english...

First of all. Shut the fuck up. I didn't say I don't know what d35 is. If you actually read the thread before adding your nonsense to it, you would see that I already posted the axle information for him earlier using that exact terminology. I happen to own an XJ, that just so happens to have a d35 rear. Nowhere in my comment did I mention anything about a dana 35 axle. So apparently your ability to read is on par with your ability to write.
If you are going to try and help the guy out, that's fine. But you might want to write it so he can understand what the fuck you are saying. Coherent sentences might just help.

 I was thinking the same thing. He's working on HAI's quickest ban award. It would be better if he was at least entertaining like Tonnerre, but unfortunately that's not the case so far.

i've owned 5 or 6 cherokees (xj's), two wranglers (both yj's), and a '75 J-10, and have worked on a couple different grand cherokees (both zj's). my last xj had ~8 inch lift running 35's and all kinds of other crap. you may want to look under the jeep where the motor meets up to the tranny and look for oil. the 4.0's are notorious for having rear main leaks. look for a cherokee with a np231 t-case. it will have only 2hi, 4hi, N, 4lo. its a better t-case then the np242 that has full time and part time 4hi. its not all bad but the 231 is a better t-case. also, if your looking at an older xj or yj and its a 5-speed, make sure it doesn't have a peugeot tranny. its the worst tranny jeep has ever put in anything. stay away from that like the plague.
HTH

Nothing wrong with the 242's just stay away from the 249's (full time 4wd), the viscious couplers in them suck ass.

they are just a pain to upgrade with an SYE and they like to stay in 4wd long after you dont want to be, but other than that. :) VERY true about the full time cases but luckily they are only in the grands with the v8's (and other mopar trucks)

you're wrong bitch, there was a few grandcherokees 93+ that were manual. I cant remember where i found it, i think some where on jeepsunlimited its a canadian model.
