I have a 99 si with a jrsc. Lately i have been hearing a odd sound coming from the engine bay. They best way I can describe it is that it sounds like a "flutter" or "someone whistling"
Car was been unusually sluggish. And last night on the way home from work I was at a stop light and I could hear a belt was loose. Can't mistake that sound. So I figured that the belt that runs the supercharger must be loose causing the loss of power and erractic engine response.
Anyone know how tight the belt should be? Or have anyother ideas of what it could be?

The belt's slipping for sure. Mine did the same thing.
I'm not sure what the torque rating's supposed to be, but it's not enough. Just tighten the tensioner pully a little bit at a time until it stops. It should only require a turn or two.

thanks. i'll have to find this "tensioner pulley" you are talking about. ;)

Also check the alternator belt which is often overlooked. You have to loosen a bolt on the tensioner wheel behind the drivers side wheel. Then you can use a 10 mm wrench with extension to tighten the tensioner. Be sure to retighten the bolt behind the wheel well when finished. Next is the SC belt. For that one you have to loosen a 12 mm nut on the tensioner next to the supercharger. Next to that is another 10 mm bolt that adjusts the tension. Crank that down a couple turns then retighten the 12 mm nut. They say there should be about a half inch of deflection when you press your finger against the belts so go off of that although you will probably need to be a bit tighter. Just don't crank it down because it will cause excessive wear to the blower snout assembly.

At least you're not going through what Hector is. He's on his second belt in less than two months.

His metal pulley is fucked and causing "special" wear on the belt.

lol, special wear, I like that. Yeah JR usually replaces those for free when they wear out.

See Tobi! We should have just used that belt I picked up. Ya know, the one that could wrap around the tire? That would help him keep up!;)

Could be worse, my friends SC'd mustang goes through belts so often he has to keep a spare in the back seat. Good ol' Ford engineering.

got the new belt installed. did it myself. Thanks for all the help. When, if ever, do you need to replace the pulleys?

When you notice excessive wear. I know that's not a clear asnwer, but you'll be able to tell. Trust me.
I think Jackson racing sells them for about 20 bucks each. I've heard rumors that another company (Endyne maybe?) is working on ones that don't wear out. Might be worth looking into.
