I've been looking lately into building up this 8v Golf that I have with a turbo setup, with.. lots of help and time of course, since I know jack about motors. Checking into kits for my car, it seems that they run around $2500 for a "bolt-on" set up, including a chip and everything you need to run it.. however, that doesn't seem right. We all hear stories about $200 turbo setups and other setups that cost 5-6k, so I'm just wondering what you guys builds have cost and how extreme or conservative they are.

Sidenote: It's possible, and financially not hard at all, to supercharge the motor in my car as well. This seems like a cool idea, but almost everyone I've talked to about it seems to think a turbo would be a much better investment. This time I'm not talking some budget thrown together job either, so any and all input would be greatly appreciated

2500 is cheap for mass produced. Mine cost 600 but it was all junkyard stuff.

Mine was $2000-2500... custom setup with new parts for almost everything.

originally mine was about $1500-2000 with a cheap xspower FMIC and WG, tial BOV and i made my own manifold, IC pipes, etc. and used crome EMS (fairly cheap, but effective)

i am redoing it now cause i am making a manifold that clears AC, going with a bigger tial WG, redoing my IC piping, and i am stepping up to AEM ems. i will also be upgrading my fuel system to run E85. this time i will have somewhere between $3-4k in to it by the time i am done. im expecting 500+HP though so its not an average build.

i would say most COMPLETE kits that are of good quality should run around $3k

i have done a couple junkyard setups for friends that were around $600-800 and still worked very well for what they were.

custom setup with new parts for almost everything.

That's what I'm looking into, including most likely the engine and transmission as well

I might also look into a 1.8t swap, but $2000 for a swapped stock engine < cheap turbo engine that you can replace over and over for cheap

If you want engine work it could run anywhere from 3.5K-10K or even more depend on your set-up. Machine work ain't cheap, I think you should just stick with what ya got and boost it for a while til it blow than do the 1.8t swap or rebuilt the old motor.

That's kinda the plan, I just meant swapping out the engine in there now for one from an automatic Jetta or some low miles car that hasn't been beaten on before. My car is from New England and it's been chipped with a higher rev limiter than stock, plus the transmission needs a rebuild, so you know it's been beaten on hard. It'd probably toss a rod before 500 miles :p

The VW ABA tranmission is a piece of shit. Say good by the gears and the diff around 250 tq.

I've been thinking about turboing my Jetta for many years. At one point I had most of the parts and then sold them all.

To do it right you are going to need something else to tweak the fuel and timing. I was looking at getting a Splitsec ftc-1 in combination with a chip.

I'd only be looking for around 200whp, so it'd be okay.. if that. I've heard stories about them though for sure, and apparently some people swap them out for 1.8 trannies (don't know the code)

I never did the math but on my old ITR, when all was said and done, I think I had $4-5K in mine. That included EVERYTHING from the custom turbo kit using all new parts, to the pistons, labor to bore/hone the block and re-assemble, and included the ECU, tuning and exhaust.
I did lots of research and snatched up all the parts only when I found a good deal on what I wanted. Tobi hooked me up with the block work and re-assmbling and installing the motor.

Like I said, I was going to turbo my Jetta.

Instead I bought the Eclipse for $1750 and a new clutch for $450 = Turbo Awd for $2200 running 14's right away.

im afraid to add up all the parts I bought for mine. I didnt cut any corners though and bought fairly decent stuff. If i had to guess though it would be between 3 and 4k

As far as price goes, I really think it depends on what your after. If your going for mild hp upgrades, then it won't cost you much, but if your after buslength beat downs on decently hp'd modded cars and big hp numbers, spinning tires at 60+mph, etc, then it's going to cost you significantly more also depending on what kind of car/engine your modding. It's also not just the turbo kit itself that costs the money, but all the supporting mods, fuel, drivetrain, suspension, EMS, etc if you after the "total package".

For me, the total package will start at 15-20k..... and will go up from there.

That's what I'm talking about, minus the suspension stuff, which I would do before any kind of forced induction shit. That's why I'm asking about "running turbo setups" :p

And as far as buying a car and running 14's, that's not really what I'm after. I just want a car that's fast enough for me and fun to drive, so it may not even be the Golf I do it to, or do anything to.. I just used it as an example. If I wanted to fuck up my Volvo's tranny I could boost the everloving shit out of it, but it'd still be kinda boring

With new clutch, flywheel, tuning and everything else, I think was about $1500.

Hell, I don't wanna know what mine is up to. Turbo "kit" was like $5200, but it wasn't exactly an off the shelf kit. Add in the motor, clutch, axles, etc. I've got well over $15K into it... That scares me.
