I want to learn to ride, and I figure I might as well get a cheap light bike to ride around and learn a bit. So I dont know many of them, so far all I know of are a Ninja 250, and a Yamaha FZR 400.
I dont want to spend a lot and I dont want to look like a total jackass either. Can you guys recomend any bikes to learn on, that look kind of cool so I can actually ride it to work if need be. Also if you know a good place to find bikes for sale that would help to thanks!;wor;

Yeah I was thinking of starting with something like 1200cc but ya know I figured it would be cheaper just starting out with like 250-400cc max. hehe

Hey I have a Honda 90, but I need something with atleast double that power to get started, hehe.
I didnt realized that for 2002 their making a Ninja 250 which looks like a great starter bike.

I just bought a Suzuki SV650 as my first bike. Probably a bit much for a first bike but oh well. A friend bought a 1999 R1 as a first bike, he beat the shit out of it though, It lasted about 6months.

I figure start riding around on like a 250-400 than go take the riding class, get liscenes, get a 600, get 1000+!

It always starts out this way.....................but once you get on the showroom floor its a different story. My plan was to get an old beat up bike to ride around for a year and get a license w with.......I already knew how to ride but I just wanted to sharppen my skills on a smaller bike....................instead I got the fastest looking highest redlining 600 I could get (R6) In the end I would have to say that I am happier going straight for what I wanted rather than riding a smaller bike for a year or more. Just be careful no matter what bike you get............and always wear a helmet..................I am sometimes bad about that though.:p Originally posted by turbodScooby

Id go and look at every bike in the 600 class. You may find one that is more comfortable to your back side, and that you fit it more comfortably. Kawasaki's are pretty comfortable for a sportbike, although not the fastest, and the F4i is a awsome bike but you may aswell trade the seat for a cinderblock.

A 600 would probably be fine for a first bike assuming you already know how to ride a motorcycle. I think a 1000 is for a first bike is asking for trouble, they are just a lot more bike to control and a lot more power to make mistakes with. But, a 600 will kill you just as easily as a 1000. It comes down to what kind of head is on your shoulders. People that buy bikes for the coolness factor or to impress people are *usually* the ones that eat shit first. But we all crash eventually I guess...I've 2 under my belt :)

http://www.msf-usa.org/ there seemed like 2 good places in CO to take the class. One had classes in the springs and by laury and the other had a class in westy (i think). If anyone is looking for a good book on riding, check out either the MSF (motorcycle safty foundation)'s text book, or Proficient Motorcycling (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1889540536/ref=pd_bxgy_img_2/002-3245590-9429604) the 2nd is great... covers everything you could immagine. From basic controll of the bike, to picking the best path for a curve to what to do in panic situations. Definatly worth the money (a LOT cheaper than a wreck)
