View Full Version : Are we becoming more immature?

I'm starting to see allot of 'fuck ups' lately. By 'fuck ups' I mean people who just cant seem to learn. Kids who drop out of school, have children, find themselves in prison, and repeat this process until they do learn or become a burden to society.
Younger folks tend to stay young longer nowadays too. Back in the day by the time you're 24 you're working full time, have a degree, raising a family, attending church everyday, vote once a year, etc. But I'm starting to see more and more people who just cant (or doesnt want to) get past their 'late teens'.
Do you know how many 30+ years old that I know who's unemployed and live with their parents?
Now dont take me wrong. I've been raised that one should be with, or near, your family. But I also been taught that you should never, ever, become a burden. Like being 32 without a job, higher education, and chatting on the net all day.
Is society becoming too soft?
edit: Why the fuck cant we edit the title?

It's because nobody has any real values or respect for anything anymore. They just do whatever they want, regardless of the consequences or right vs wrong, and then blame everyone else when it blows up in their face. Every generation gets worse, and I can only wonder how much lower we can go before we just collapse completely.
BTW: Nice title, President Bush. :D
I blame the government...
...and the Discovery Channel.

not, exactly the way to start a serious conversation about the downfall of society....

and again :werd: -- it started as a joke "well I'll just go on Springer and blame my momma!" But then it became real. The day that some bitch got money from McDonald's because she spilt her OWN hot coffee on HERSELF while SHE was driving was the fucking armageddon. It was re-visited when a couple years later a chick sued for burning her mouth on a hot pickle, then days later her husband sued for "loss of companionship" -- lawyers are societys downfall. We should burn them all at the stake like they used to do with witches... those salemites had the right idea, just the wrong profession.

well as long as we let this kind of behavior continue we will forever be burdened with losers.... try yelling at those bums who wave like a rockstar! That is my esape....its funny when a line of cars hear you ask the mid 20's bum why he has to beg for money rather than work for it. (dont yell at the vets- its fucked up) but yeah.
No. Every generation has asked this questions since the beginning of man kind, and yet, we've never reached any sort of catostrophic collapse. It's nothing to worry about.

its the environment they are raised in that made them that way

I beg to differ.
There's only so much that can be tolerated before people start to react.
I hope it doesn't become destructive.
I know that most younger people are less respective of other people and their property.. This is becoming an issue with me anyways..I'll start suing..If that doesn't work..then I'll tell their momma.. if that doesn't work...I'll Kill em!

^^^^^ ummm why? This issue will probably spark some debate what with Veterans Day so close... but why the hell can't i yell at the guy holding a sign that says "Hungry Vet, plz help. God bless." I don't care if you're the punk 20 year old or if you're 85 and were in 'Nam -- get the hell off the side of the road begging for money. There are plenty of vets who were able to find jobs/work when they got out, just like there are plenty of 20 year old punks who do the same.....

You would think that a vet would have more work ethic and motivation to get an actual job than a regular citizen.

I tease all those losers on the side of the road. I hang a $20 out the window before the light turns green and then speed off right before they get to my truck while laughing out the window

What you said didn't differ from what I said, you just said that you would sue some little kids.
Young people have never had respect since the beginning of time. A lot of people are age are just growing up ourselves, and realizing how tactless we where as children. Don't worry, society is not falling apart at the seems. Calm down.

I would have to put my blame on mothers of america. Parenting is the main reason, and it is tough to be a parent when anytime you scold your child, you have to worry about the cops being called on you for being a child abuser. So, kids grow up with no discipline in their lives and end up being complete shitheads as adults. They have no respect for their elders and just want to "get by" in life because they know that mommy and daddy have to bail them out of any trouble.

:werd: My parents weren't afraid to knock some sense into me when I was out of line as a kid, and I'm better off because of it. Parents these days need to stop taking the easy way out and trying to be friends with their kids, and actually be a parent for once.

the problem is that people that shouldn't become parents are having chill'ens. if they don't know how to be a parent (they're 2 young, or their parents were pieces of shit, whatever) then they just half ass it and their kid turns into a douche. then when he/she has kids same thing... it spreads. it's the new AIDS....

I'd say my dad did both. He was my friend when he needed to be, and a parent when he needed to be.

I can agree that little kids don't know about respect. However, it's up to the parents to keep them in line and teach them respect, and that's pretty rare these days. Sure, that problem existed back in the 80's and probably earlier, but it wasn't as bad as it is today. I don't see how you can say that our society today has as much respect, decency, and values as it did decades ago. Just look at the crap on TV these days... it's clearly documented that profanity, sex, drugs / alcohol, greed, and violence have gradually become much more "acceptable" on the air waves than they were just a few decades ago. The same is true of people's conduct. And look at how kids are acting today... that sure isn't how people acted when I was that age; we would have gotten our asses beat, and we would have deserved it too.
The only progress we have made as a society is treating women and minorities as equals, and the advancement of technology. When it comes to values, we continue to get worse as worse. Our declining morals may not mean that society will collapse tomorrow, but I sure don't see it adding any strength to our civilization... it's definately hurting it. It's a pretty serious problem when so many people completely ignore what's right or wrong, and make their decisions based only on if it's illegal and how likely it is that they would be caught. I'm not talking about victimless crimes here... there are plenty of bad things you can do that are not prohibited by law, but they still hurt other people, as well as society. You really don't have to be religious, spiritual, etc., to know and respect right vs wrong. Civilization was created by people who had no laws, but chose to work together to better themselves and others, and they knew that they needed to respect and enforce right vs wrong in order to make that a success. What we are seeing today is the opposite of that, and it's not hard to understand that the opposite of construction is destruction.

This argument is the biggest waste of time and space in the universe. The argument of "is god real, and if so, how come he lets bad things happen to good people" has more merit.
Because I hear "hell" on tv does not make society worse. Because I see an *almost* naked tit on NBC does not make me rape little girls. Because I play a video game where the point is to kill/rape/maim/crash cars does NOT make me get into a car and start doing these things in real life. And anyone who says differently or tries to use that BULLSHIT as an excuse needs to be dragged out in the street, shot, and have their family billed for the fucking bullet.
If TV effects the way you live your life other than a) advertisements make you buy stuff that you may not normally, and b) what you watch on said TV then you need to get the fuck OUT of the gene pool. Likewise with whiny, little fucksticks who claim they can't tell fantasy from reality... sorry that's kind of a big point in living (right up there with BREATHING); so if you cant' grasp it, you fucking LOSE!
It is true that our generation, and the younger one have less and less respect for pretty much everything. But its technological advancement that creates that. While I wasn't a punk-ass kid, and I did respect my elders; I also didn't work as hard for what I got/wanted as say my Grandfather, or hell even my father. It's just the way things are... as things get easier and easier people don't appreciate/respect them as much. Human Nature.
*EDIT*
The only progress we have made as a society is treating women and minorities as equals, and the advancement of technology.
also shenanigans. women and minorities are still not treated equally. if they were they wouldnt need to be referred to as 'women and minorities.' It's closer, but still not equal.
This is exactly what I'm talking about Weston. Things aren't any worse than they used to be, you are just maturing yourself and seeing how kids act from a different perspective. I think this is really a 20-30 revalation and people shouldn't waste time getting caught up in it. I like that you brought up TV as an exmaple. Go watch any movie from the 50's and almost all of them will have some greaser kids in it who talk trash, start shit, and constantly break the rules. Same as today.
Weston, let's be honest here. You and I don't know shit about how things were before we were born, so there is no point in trying to tell me that things are happening today that have not happened in the past, especially since everything is relative. Flappers in the 20's were considered the down fall of society, yet, we'd all laugh at them today. Don't bother telling me it's because we have less moral values now than before.
It's a crock of shit to say that kids when you were young didn't act the way they do now. You were not as conscious of other people's actions then as you are now. Ask your parents, ask your grand parents. Anyone who is not a moron should be able to explain to you that even though specific styles change, the general mannerisms of children and young people are the same.
Another thing that you have to keep in mind is the way you were raised. Your parents did a good job with you, and part of that good job, is keeping you away from families that do a shit job, therefor, it's reasonable that you would remember all your friends as being as much of an angel as you were because they probably were. Now, you're more sensitive to seeing bad kids than you were when your parents tried to sensor you from them.
Plus, you've got a naturally negative attitude, so you will natrually focus on how bad a kid acts, and completely miss a well behaved child (I know I would).

That's not really what I was getting at. I was talking about things that are now considered "acceptable", but your more extreme scenario is somewhat related, so I'll address it anyway...
Of course it doesn't make people do those things. However, it does encourage those fantasies and behaviour... some people can handle it, but an increasing number of people can't, so they act on it. It is definately not an excuse at all, and it's still their fault, but it is happening.
If TV effects the way you live your life other than a) advertisements make you buy stuff that you may not normally, and b) what you watch on said TV then you need to get the fuck OUT of the gene pool. :werd: But it is still happening and we have to deal with it, so that makes it a problem for all of us.
also shenanigans. women and minorities are still not treated equally. if they were they wouldnt need to be referred to as 'women and minorities.' It's closer, but still not equal.
I agree with you, but now you're just trying to nit-pick at what I said. We cant be equal until we get rid of everything that treats races differently, like "affirmitive action" and "diversity month". If you want everyone to be equal, you have to stop treating certain groups like they're special and are somehow entitled to more than the rest of us. You don't see me protesting in the street, demanding hand outs, special treatment, and "Ukrainian / Scandinavian Hybrid Culture Month". I work to earn what I have, and so should everyone else.

thats what i think 99.9% of the problem is..people that shouldnt be having kids have then, and then there kids grow up or should i say "get older" and start the chain all over...
also i agree with your TV remark... TV doesnt make people go out and be dumb or drop there morals and if they cant handle it then dont watch it.

Stu also has a good point. I've heard many stories from parents and grandparents about stuff they used to do that you couldn't get away with today.
