Okay so dont laugh at me but heres what happened: I was up in the mountains and my oil light comes on. I figure I'll be okay driving it for a couple of miles till I can get to a gas station or whatever to get some oil. Then I hear the rattles... so I pull over try to call someone but get no reception. So I just drove it a ways; the rattling gets worse, and worse but I make it to a gas station get oil fill it on up. Sounds good for about 10 minutes then the rattles start back up.
Car still makes rattles, can anyone tell me what I did, or give me any general advice on how to resolve my problem. Ive filled it up with oil once more because it burned through all the oil I get before.
The cars a 97 ex with 81,000 miles.
Thanks in advance.

you ran your car with no oil. so the rattling you heard where shavings of metal being scraped off of the internals of your engine.
sounds like you killed some bearings. Rattle noise is most likely rod knock. Time for a rebuild or new engine.

x2.....the thick new oil probably filled yoru bearings and rings temporarily till it warmed up again....bearings are toast....

Yeah, your bearings are shot now, and your oil passages are likely clogged with metal bits as well. When the oil light comes on, it means shut the engine off immediately because you don't have oil.

Hey tugboat, you might as well donate your car to a tugboat and let them use it as an anchor.

Kind of reminds me of the stories I've heard of people bringing their car in for oil changes.
"I knew it was time to change the oil because the oil light came on"
Uhhh, its a oil pressure light, not oil level. I guess you live and you learn.

Just get a used D-series motor and drop it in there. I see ones in good condition go for a few hundred $ all the time, much cheaper than getting your motor fixed.

Cavaliers and some others actually have an oil level light too. Apparently the dip stick is too complicated for some people.
