ok im on vacation visiting my family down in florida. i went to use my moms truck today and it starts but stalls immediately. so i have to hold the throttle down to get it to stay running. once it warms up it runs just fine. any ideas on what the problem could be. oh ya its a 2000 ford ranger. thanks for any help

I'm guessing it's a throttle body not a carb!! Could be a bad idle control valve or a bunch of other things.

I don't know Ford Rangers, but if it were a Honda, the first thing I'd look at is the fast idle thermo-valve (it increases airflow at idle until the coolant is up to normal temp). I'd imagine that the Ranger has something similar. The idle "circuit" (ie where the air flows through at idle to keep the engine from dying) could also be dirty... I had that problem all the time on my old VW Bug.

coolant temp sender for the ECU is suspect, as is the IACV. Are you getting any codes?

my ranger does this too. Just bounce the throttle a couple times and the idle valve will open up.
