lean it out a tad and adjust your timing.

^ what he said, but if you have no clue how to do that then run a 50/50 or 75/25 mix of 91 octane gas and E85. that will lean it out quite a bit.
what causes high CO #'s?

There should be a plate screw on it somewhere. Turn it in (closing the fuel pathway) untill it starts to sputter a little bit. Then turn it out 1/4 of a turn. Drive it around and make sure it doesn't sputter on accel. If it does turn it out another 1/4 and repeat. Most carbs will be pretty close after the first time you turn it 1/4 but you never know. Make sure your timing is set first so you don't pre detonate with a lean mixture and backfire the carb. It could hurt the carb if you do that.

any clue what the screw would look like? i found the idle speed screw. its one you can turn by hand. this is gonna sound bad but its in the back, its black, and the screw head is large so u can turn it by hand. is that what you are talking about. i tried to retake emissions again. i replaced the O2 sensor, just hoping and added some of that guarntee to pass emissions stuff. CO is now 53 instead of 58. so no change. i need to lean out the carb. i only get like 25 mph. i know i should be in the 30s

The adjustment screw will be on the side, towards the bottom of the carb.

is it down by the idle speed screw or on one of the sides facing the sides of the car?
thanks a bunch for all of your help

I think I just realized why we're not on the same page. Is it a side draft carb?

At this point you should take your car to Tobi or Moe, or any other mechanic. This is something you should let someone else handle until you learn a bit more. Only because your trying to get past emissions, and with the little knowledge you have right now, you would be spending more on retesting than having a mechanic get it set for you.
