So i have a mostly ford background so im way outta place here. however, i want to help my buddy build up his 2000 prelude sh. is there a few things that are a must as far as daily driver naturally aspirated performance?

so far he only has a short ram style intake.

also, what are the benefits of a VTEC controller if any?

thanks for puttin up with my newb-ness

The VTEC controller (depending on brand) would be beneficial if you decide to leave it all motor. You can optimize VTEC engagement and play with the fuel numbers to get the best overall performance out of the engine. Also a good exhaust, set of cams, cam gears and tuning should be on that list.

so whats a good exhaust thats not gonna cost my eventual firstborn? hopefully a matched system if possible

Its really up to your tastes, I personally like the Greddy exhuasts and the T1R stuff (expensive). We build custom exhuasts to suit also that are much cheaper than a pre-fab one. A DC header is pretty much the standard. I think there is a used one for sale here too if you look for a sale by Doogie06

I got a Vtec controller for sale, $100...if interested shoot me a PM man. As far as the exhaust goes, don't have anything for sale there. But, Tobi is right, it's all about what you want man, there are a ton of options. The Greddy Evo seems to be the common choice by many. Good luck.

By the way, tell your buddy, expect parts to be either "custom" or "backorder" or "custom backorder". It's a great car, but their parts are not mass produced.

I agree with Tobi on the N/A upgrades, I also have a Apexi RS Cat-back exhaust in stock for the prelude SH at a good price, send me a pm or call me at the shop 303-922-6681.

back to the question of what the vtec controller does. does it just change the cam switchover?

this is how i think of vtec... lemme know if im mistaken
vtec is like running two different cams. a low lift not so hot cam that'll allow you to do normall everyday driving and a race-like-cam that'll engage once you hit like 6k rpms.

I know that in domestics if u run a really agressive race cam on the street you dont get moving untill you hit like 3-4k cuz the powerband has heen shifted up. if thats the case how early could you engage vtec while still making good power?

I'm not technical at all, so I got this off of a site:

Corrections can be made according to throttle position and includes parameters for both low and high camshaft lobes. This is what is required to change V-TEC engagement points without damaging your engine. A common misconception of a V-TEC controller is that changing the RPM engagement point alone will result in increased performance gains. Another misconception is that increasing fuel according to RPM will result in increased performance. In reality, when you modify the V-TEC engagement point from the factory setting, the factory ECU is still on the non V-TEC fuel map. With the V-TEC, this problem is cured by the Unmatched Fuel Correction function. When this function is used in addition to the camshaft lobe and throttle position sensitive fuel control, the result will be a perfectly tuned engine.

Kamikaze makes a 4-1 header but I am not sure if it will fit the SH. If you order from them expect to wait a while because like mentioned before they don't carry it in stock and takes about 4-6 weeks for them to make one and ship it out. I have a base with the kamikaze header and Greddy EVO II exhaust. Doesn't sound to loud or ricey.
