...at least concerning traffic violations.

They are more concerned with making money than handing out proper punishments. So Billy Bob (seems to be the theme to do this around here) gets pulled over doing 77 in a 55, no insurance, and hasn't switched his out of state license over to a CO license and has been living in CO for longer than the 30 day period.

Billy Bob gets insurance the very next day. He also orders a copy of his birth certificate, because he lost his, to switch his license over to a CO license.

Billy Bob goes to court on his assigned date. Out of 13 points license points and a maximum fine of $1500 combine for all charges he recieves $500 worth of charges, which include all court fees (etc) and 4 points.

Why are people going to carry insurance if they all know all they have to do is get insurance if they happen to get pulled over. Not only that but they only have to pay the minumum to start the policy, recieve paperwork, then cancel the policy. Nobody... and that's why a large percentage of the CO public doesn't have auto insurance.

/rant

P.S. I, personally, have kept and am going to keep my auto insurance for wondering minds. I know I should have had it in the first place, we all make mistakes, huh?

MOST people in Colorado DO have insurance. You're only fucking yourself by not having insurance. You should have still been busted for insurance because you were driving without it. It's different than just not having proof. Shame on you for not having insurance by the way.

I know I should have. I do now and will continue to from now on.

Really, though, then entire point of this is... if they have such easy ways around the imposed punishment for not having it how do they expect to enforce it?

I thought that though MOST have insurance a LOT still don't?

Well, I've been a claims adjuster for 10 months now. I get an average of 4 claims a day, 4 days a week. Out of those (average) 16 claims a week for the past ten months, I'd say that 1 of every 75 the other person does not have insurance. That's why I offered up that most people have insurance. I really can't quote any statistics for you.

Oh I know, but most people don't care about anyone else but themselves, plus you are guaranteed to be fucked if you don't have insurance yourself. If you're a stand up guy with a steady job with no insurance, they'll just pursue you directly. If they can keep track of where you work, they can garnish your wages if you're at fault.

Kind of on topic I suppose...
A bunch of dudes I know that have motorcycles do what was mentioned above, get basic insurance, wait for their card to come in the mail, then call and cancel their insurance. Half of them can barely afford the payment on their fancy new bike, so ofcourse then don't want to pay insurance when the bike is sitting in the garage for months at a time over the winter.

There is a form you can fill out where you don't need insurance and they wont harass you about it, if you provide proof of another vehicle that is insured. Of course said form is also saying you wont be using it, but it's great for a bike in the winter months.

Anytime you have something financed you have to keep it insured with both comp and collision. Just because you aren't riding it, doesn't mean that it can't get stolen, or damaged by wind, water, hail, fire, etc.

Why do you think you make your payment to the Colorado Department of Revenue? ;)
