So I have heard that old fuel injectors can tick. Is this true? What causes it? Does it mean they are on their way out? I'd really hate to spend $400+ to replace the injectors in a ~$1k car.

Yeah, my fuel injectors tick. I believe its the moving parts, or the solenoids that control them.

Is this the beginning of the end for them or can they "tick" for quite some miles?

Probably because they're stock replacements. OEM = $$$$
