View Full Version : If you had $35k to spend on a car...

...what would you buy? And why?

I'm in the same boat. An STI Limited would be a nice overall package (less racerish than a regular STI and more creature comforts). I also like the Audi A4 2.0T.

The problem I have with Audis is the maintenance costs.

I've been looking pretty seriously at a G35... all the creature comforts I want, with enough power to get out of it's own way.

Why's that? They're not that great on gas, and they require premium... not to mention it's not real practical as a real SUV.

It's a silly idea, but one I've been toying with a lot lately: An RX-8 with a turbo or supercharger kit. I'd buy one with an LSD and cloth seats and the six speed then buy a Greddy Turbo or the new Petit Axial Flow supercharger, Interceptor X and exhaust. You'd get an awesome handling car that puts out about 280-300 whp depending on tuning; the only downside is fuel economy.

You'd need a daily driver if you were to have that in Colorado during the winter, though. But that's an awfully tempting car. What's an interceptor X?

Skaterkid
09-27-2006, 09:28 PM
Bah, winter tires would get you through the 6 days of snow we have. An Interceptor X is the best piggyback out there for the RX-8. Gives you great control over the ignition and fuel curve without all the fuckups of E-Manage.

G35 coupe, with the 6 speed. I've gotten out of the Evo stage, and would want something more refined and elegant. Or maybe a family car, those TSX's and TL's are mighty fine indeed.

Chris. No offense, but a G35 is not a practical Colorado car either. :)

Yes, provided you get a good tune and you get an oil line restrictor. If you look over at www.rx8club.com, MadDog and MazdaManiac have been running turbos for a while on the Renesis. 7 psi nets you 240 whp so you'll easily keep up with an STi on anything short of a launch, and 300 whp is feasible if you go to 9 psi.

It's between the 335i and a 2004 Audi S4, although.... I can't seem to find many mods for the Audi V8 they slapped under the hood.

not the best but not the worst on gas... if you want good gas mileage get a prius....

who cares if it requires premium... i'm sure a lot of cars now require premium not to mention your G35...

there is no real SUV... but its a 4wd... 4 door... ok ground clearance... can take camping...

The only mods are going to be bolt ons or internals. There is no room for any sort of FI from what I see.

Mine averages about 400 miles per tank. It has a 18 gallon tank. Use nothing but premium. It has more get up and go over than 99% of the other SUV's out there. It can build almost full boost off the line by power breaking. Ask the Durango RT and a later model esclade that :D

I'd buy Mark's Supra.

Thats a hell of a good idea and you'd still have over 10k to drop into it:)

But thats a tough choice...I'd get either an NSX with the least amount of miles 35K can buy or I'd get an Escalade EXT, maybe a Caddi CTS V...too many choices!!!!!

I recalculated my finances, and even with my recently acquired living expenses, I can afford a new car right around the $30-35k range. I've considered modding the tC beyond it's basic bolt-ons, but have decided instead that I would like something a little more luxurious.

I've seriously been considering the G35 coupe...

exciv2000

I think the G35 has a great looking and unique exterior, but I've also read many reviews and witnessed first hand how cheap the interior looks and feels, both in plastics and leather/leatherette... IMO the level of quality certainly doesn't match the price. Highway noise is intrusive and the ride is somewhat unsettling over Colorado's many average quality roads. The rush of power is great but the engine is not nearly as smooth as the straight 6 in the 330i/xi or V6 in the TL. Just some things to think about if luxury is the primary buying factor. Definitely check out some of the other offerings between + and - 5K of the G35, as there are varying degrees of luxury, quality, performance, etc. that will help you define more clearly what you really want.
