View Full Version : To fight a $20 ticket or not?

Okay last Saturday afternoon I was driving home from work in Boulder. I get a call from my brother to go help him out so I go ahead and pull off flatirons to head toward Lafayette. Anyways, minding my own business I see a cop on the other side of the road. Than for some reason he turns around really fast as if someone did something wrong. Believe it or not, he pulls behind me really fast and turns on his lights. I'm think to myself that I didn't do anything wrong so why the hell is he pulling me over? So the officer gets out of the car and tells me that I don't have a front license plate. He takes my information and I wait for him to return. He comes back and tells me that it's not a big deal to not have a front license plate, but in Broomfield county, it's a big deal. So he goes ahead and gives me a $20, 0 point ticket. What an asshole! There are lots of people speeding and driving crazy and he decides I need a front license plate!
Anyways, I got some time to kill, so I was thinking if I should wait till November to fight it. I'm pretty pissed about this, it's such a fucking petty crime! I'm really leaning towards fighting it, even if it's only $20. Is there a way I could go and talk to someone about fighting this too?
Well, technically it IS a Colorado law, so to be blunt, you're shit outta' luck. Pay it.

It's not worth your time or trouble to fight it. Colorado law says that vehicles registered and driven in this state have to have one, and there's just no way around that. You could only potentially get out of this type of ticket if the car was registered in another state, or if you got caught driving a Colorado registered vehicle without a front plate in another state.
There are plenty of areas that are enforcing this law. It's big in Boulder county and others too. The fine you got is a lot lower than it could have been (some cities really jack their fines up in order to make money), so be happy about that.

Do a fix it ticket? Bring in a picture of your car with the front licence plate back on the car........see what they do?
Oh, another thing I thought of is that literally the only way you could get out of this ticket is if you plead not guilty in court, and the issuing officer didn't show up for court on the new court date assigned (I would guess he wouldn't.. but you never know).

I got pulled over in Broomfield last saturday for no front plate. The cop was cool and let me off with a warning. :D
Since it's just a $20 ticket w/ no points, you're better off just paying it. If you choose to fight it, you'll lose and end up paying $20 plus whatever court costs are (~$50).

Yea no offense man, but you WERE breaking the law... I know it's shitty, but it's only 20 bucks.

guess I better put mine on, sounds like they are cracking down. I'll save my $20... what can I put behind my plate to prevent rocks from getting in between my bumper and the plate and scratching my bumper?

do that and say the week before it fell off and you didnt realize untill the cop gave you the ticket.. it could work

Uh, that would be admitting you did not have a license plate on, thus completely voiding the whole point of going to a courtdate especially for something like this.

Got the same ticket w/ 0 points. Went to court and they couldn't do nothing since it is 0 points. So i had to pay the ticket + court fee and I still don't have a front plate.

It doesn't matter... If you don't have a front plate, you're clearly guilty, regardless of if you admit it or not. Lying about things isn't going to help... it's just going to lead to stiffer penalties and less pleasant encounters with the police. Being honest and taking responsibility for your actions will surprise the hell out of the cop and get you off the hook more often than lying will.

Word. I'll vouch for that, that's gotten me out of quite a bit of shit before. A HELL of a lot more than when I've lied to the cop. They can see right through you when you're lyin'.

:werd: It's because most of the people that they deal with just lie their asses off and refuse to take responsiblity for their actions, so not only are they are sick and tired of dealing with people like that, but they are also experts at determining when someone is lying. Even if you come up with a convincing lie, your body language gives you away a lot more than you'd think. Most cops will appreciate your honesty and maturity so much that they will cut you a significant break.

He pulled you over because your a lowered honda with aftermarket exhaust... (judging from your ava)... most cops love to profile.

Not really. A guy I work with got a ticket for the same thing... he's 60+ years old and drives a Jeep. Most people who claim "profiling" or "entrapment" (even though they don't understand WTF that really is) are just trying to avoid taking responsibility for the fact that they broke the law.

Not saying that they'll only pull over imports, and sorry thats the way it came out. I was merely stating that cops profile imports more then anything else really... and im sure most of us can agree to that.
IE: You got a minivan and an import speeding, both doing say, 70 in a 55. They're going for the import and thats pretty much a given.

Cops pull me over all the damn time when driving the RX-7 or my Evo. If I am driving my Dodge truck, I never get pulled over.....That's why I decided to get Prepaid legal about a year ago. Any time I get a ticket I take a lawyer and the shit gets dropped!

I got pulled in Broomfield a few times for no front plate..they just use it for an excuse to pull import cars over. Statistics and numbers..thats all they are going for there. If they pull over enuf imports..SOME of them will be stolen, and some people will have warrants. Simple as that.

I have only had to use it once but I got a 32 point ticket dropped to 0 points! They would have dropped it without a lawyer to 4 points but I didn't take the plea bargin and took a lawyer to court and they dropped the case completely.
Let me know if you want the Name and number of the person who can get you Prepaid legal and get you some prices....I am actually doing the $26 plan that has prepaid legal and Identity theft shield that emails me if anyone trys to run my credit.

I did have prepaid legal also write a letter to Farmers insurance telling them I was taking them to court for not paying me the amount I wanted on my totaled BMW and they called me back a week later agreeing to pay me my full asking price.

colorado law says you have to have a license plate on front.
you want to be Mr. Rebel and run without one, then you should get a ticket.

The 2 times for me was actually getting pulled over. I got a ticket on 1 and warned on the other. Downtown Denver is notorious for no front plate tickets.
