What did you think of it? How did you make it up the switchback? Through the Rock Garden?

smithz
09-20-2006, 11:40 PM
Holy hell Dave, you cut off it's nose!

You should replace the motor mounts when you do the swap. And the exhaust manifold, unless it's already been replaced. Those will be so much easier to do with everything already out of the way.

Dave_L
09-20-2006, 11:48 PM
Yeah, It's only about 10 bolts and all that stuff comes off the front end. It's gonna make pulling the motor/working on it 10 times easier. I'm gonna check everything out while its out. Im hoping to pull it by Friday night but we'll see. I am putting a new clutch in for sure.

What did you think of it? How did you make it up the switchback? Through the Rock Garden?

it was fun. only 2 trucks went through the rock garden and the 1st one took forever (im not complaining). I started to but decided to cut through the trees to the bypass.
the switchbacks were long. the big boulder at the beginning was pretty cool.

Brandon
09-21-2006, 10:11 AM
lol @ Brandon Clause. Brandon is ready when you are.
Yea Jeff, that's the one. I had a good spotter so it was cool. I was worried about my right rear 1/4 panel on a particular rock but all was well.

smithz
09-21-2006, 10:15 AM
Cool. Maybe next year I can go up it. I didn't go through the rock garden either. I would rather do that when I have heavy duty diff covers and rock sliders, just in case.

Good news is, that my Banks exhaust header and MetalCat high flow cat should be here Monday. I just have to schedule an appointment to have it put together. Yay!

Those pictures of us on the hill are really dissappointing, considering we were both almost vertical.

It's amazing what a slight tilt of the camera can do... of course it only works well if there aren't trees in the background to give away the illusion since they don't normally all grow out of the ground at 30 degree angles. :D

Still, that rock is pretty steep anyways.

I can't wait to get another truck. I've got leads on two factory locked Land Cruisers.

One is a 1996 with 100k and they are asking 13,000 OBO and have listed it at least 3 times.

The second one is a 1997 with 220k and they are asking $7,500.

Thoughts?

smithz

Twice the mileage, half the price.

Depends on the shape of all the suspension shit you don't plan on replacing. Electrical stuff too.

Conrad

land cruisers seem too big... i would stick with a taco! And if your going to wheel get something already built...

I still say buy that jeep!

No way. Here are the problems with that Jeep:
1) 4 Cylinder
2) Leaf suspension when it used to be coil? What the hell?
3) Dana 30 axle up front with 37's. Again What the hell?

1. 4 cyl... isnt always bad.. look at B's rig
2. Leafs provide more stabilty and more articulation then coils...
3. dana 30 doesnt really matter as long as the axle shafts are upgraded, the axle housing only matters in issues of weight.

Actually a few years of the early '90s LCs are quite coveted since I think they had the solid front axle still and a few other nice options for off roading and comfort.

Stu it comes down to this...

You need to make the decision how much of your new vehicle is dedicated to wheeling...

A Land Cruiser any year is an ok wheeler... It comes down to if you like playing with the big boys and not get stuck in 6 inches of snow like an unnamed toy runner.... lol

Now on this new rig... if you want something that has a good aftermarket of 4x4 stuff stick with a jeep or a taco....

a jeep is def going to be cheaper to fix then a taco... and if you wheel all the time you ARE going to break stuff in a taco or a jeep.

You have been talking about all these off the wall vehicles like RR or a LC but both are expensive to setup as capable off road vehicles. You are saying that your pockets arent infinite when it comes to cars so I say stick to the easier to work on stuff, and has a wide aftermarket.

And if you are commited to 4x4ing do the same as brandon... buy a mostly built rig and save thousands!

yeah that would be nice... but with everything else in life (the idea seems good)

It might be a super rig, the only thing i am trying to say is in my experience I dont really like the unknown because then you are like doogie... spending a lot more money for something that would have got the job done for a lot cheaper!

I wouldn't be looking to make it a rock crawler if that's what you're asking.

Just a simple lift kit, maybe lockers in the rear and some decent all terrain tires on affordable wheels.

Good look'n rig with some capabilities off-road. Preferably one that doesn't wanna blow up on me! Hence why I asked about maintenance and reliability w/ high mileage.

I'm looking for an older one to replace the Silverado. Around the early 90's.

Dave_L
11-06-2006, 02:47 PM
There are a lot of 4.0's that have over 200k miles are are still running strong. Even if it blows up, the renix motors are super cheap. You can get them for about $3-400. For a decent lift+tires, you're looking at about 1200-1300. Lockers vary on price but aren't really a necessity to get around on most trails. If you only plan on going occassionally, I'd say hold off on the lockers. Spend the money on armor so you don't have to worry about anything.

As a toyota guy, i'd rather see you get a jeep instead of a LC but in the end it's all up to you. Lets go wheeling already!

I did the whole special order/custom thing with the geo and I prefer having aftermarket support with the tacoma. It's still a lot of custom stuff but a lot of people have probably done what you want to do so there's a lot of support on the forums too.

We first tried Slaughterhouse but there was too much snow so we headed over to another trail. Here's Josh getting stuck at slaughterhouse.

At the second trail, we just hooked Josh up to the jeep and dragged him through everything.

It was worse than it looks...he came up that, got some wheelspin, and slid sideways. He had only a few inches left on loose rock before his passenger side would've fell off the ledge. It was actually me and the Blazer driver watching from above who told him to stop and wait for a rope.

With the exception of the fact that the majority of the trees have fallen up hill...

At first I though it was that huge boulder that rolled down and broken them...
except they would all be facing downward if that were the case. Same for a mud/snow slide.
