so I've been looking around, and I saw someone mention somehting about cam gears "moving the powerband" if you have aftermarket cams. Well I have the J30A1 motor with CL type S cams (J32A2) in it. Since the CLS has a redline of like 7200, and the J30A1 has a redline of like 6000 I figure the powerband of the cams is going past redline, adn if I understand correctly with adjustable cam gears I woudl be able to shift the powerband to the left on a dyno sheet. If that's the case then that sounds like a good deal.

only problem is hte only adjustable cam gears I can find for this engine are from OBX. Any good/bad things about OBX cam gears? Would you be able to adjust the cam gears on the J30 Tobi. Only reason I ask is becuase I haven't seeen a single person with adjustable cam gears on this engine.

How exactly does adjusting the cam timing affect the powerband? I realise that all this does is effect at what point during the intake/exhaust stroke that the valves open and close, but how does that affect the power? I mean, it's getting the same amount of air/gas in/out as before, it's just doing it at a different time. I tried looking online for an explatation but couldnt' find one.

It is basically advancing the cam timing (or retarding) of that cam allowing the valves to open earlier or later. It does not "shift" the powerband, it only alters the VE of the engine for optimum power. The problem with cam gears on a J30 is that if you advance the cam gear in one direction it can gain power on the intake side but lose it on the exhaust side because it is advancing both intake and exhaust lobes. Tuning the cam gears on that car would probably be a pain in the ass due to the location but it may be worth it in power gains depending on what you are after. I have seen anywhere from 5-10 NA and 10-15 on boosted engines with some good cam timing.

damn, alright thanks Tobi.

well I think I'm gonna do it, but te site where I would get them from is no longer working, so now I have to find some cam gears for that engine... if they even make them anymore.

Yes sohc engines are the same way. We were shorthanded here yesterday so a lot of calls went unanswered sorry.
