Fall 2007 I will be attending a 4 year college. I will be done here at the JC by my house. I want to ask people who have been in my situation or are currently in my situtation some questions and I am also seeking advice.

Here's my situation.

When i graduated High school, my grandpa gave me 30k. I kept that money and did not spend a dime of it, i always planned on using it for college. There are many schools around me that I have the oppurtunity to attend to. If I decide to goto San Diego State, then I would have to move out of my house, pay for rent, tuition, books, food, etc.

My other option is to attend a state school by my house in which I could live at home and not have to pay for rent or food and such in return saving a lot of money..

Attending San Diego, I would be more likly partying, meeting new people, drinking and really experiencing the world on my own for the first time. In your opinion, is moving out and spending all the extra cash on rent, food, etc really worth the experience in which I would recieve. Or do you feel that it is more important to just go and get school over with and do my thing to get out of the 4 year is more important...

I really want to go live on my own and such and experience life, but I do realize school is a lot more important then just partying. Would you suggest living at home and saving all that money that I would be spending on the above and getting school out of the way, or is the experience something that you can never replace...

I hope this makes sense.. i am somewhat depressed from the situation because I really do not know what to do..

Advice?

do what you really want to do. i personally would rather stay home and go school. you can still go out and party. plus you will spending way much money going out of state, plus tuition will be muchhh higher. i dont know its up to you. your at least 18-19 years old.

I say move away and experience new things.

Its like once in a life time thing, so do what is new if you can afford it.

Stay home and get your school done and over with. Sometimes it's kinda hard taking on alot all at once if you're not use to it.

But isn't that what really builds character? Standing up and facing the difficult and new experiences that one goes through?

I suppose it will come down to which schools I get accepted to. Then i must go from there.

You are correct. I guess it depends on how strong of an individual you are and how much you can handle. I left home when I was 17 and went out on my own and I'm glad I did it, otherwise I'd probably still be living at home as a mamas boy and that would really suck.

I think it really depends on you. I know people that went to school to experience college and they got kicked out for partying/drinking too much and not getting their shit done. Other people have done well for themselves. From what I found, you might be better off moving out to an apartment or something for the first 2 years and go to a state school that would transfer to San Diego. That way you get to move out but you still have to be responsible and you don't have the overwhelming effect from a huge school. Then go to San Diego for your last 2 years and experience that.

:werd: You may think you can handle everything at once, but it may be very overwhelming. If I were you, go to college near by that the credits are transferrable for atleast a year to get that school college feel, in which you will start picking up new responsibilities. At the same time, you will meet new people and learn new skills.

I am a freshmen and I moved out to an apartment on campus. Its a very different environment than staying home, but it comes with different and new responsibilities and I am still meeting a lot of new people. Its really up to what you want to do.

Yes, I agree with them about the getting the hell outta your parents house. Let me tell you that I didn't go to college but I have a ton of memories still and experienced a lot. Just rent a house with some buddies and let the good times roll!

This is what i have narrowed it down to. If I get into San Diego state then I will end up moving down there and getting my own apartment. But if for some reason I do not get in, then I will atend the 4 year by my house, live at home, and I will be able to get a new/used car...

You could always transfer... I say go with the best school. Whether thats by your house or far away. Think of it this way: if you move out you may get that experience and all but if you stay home you'll also get the experience of going to college while staying at home. Sounds kind of wierd, but both are experiences and unique in their own way. Just that society puts high school graduates in this position where "the experience" is to be out on your own. Either way, now or later you'll be on your own. Also, you could always get your own place even if you go to a college near your house.

Ive done both, stayed home and moved out for college and it is very different between the two. If I had a choice which would I pick? The one that offers me a better education. I must add though, I am much more focus on my own than I am at home as surprising as that may sound. I say, dont let the money affect your choice too much, that is the reason why your grandpa gave it to you, so money would not be an issue. Lastly, dont spend it on a car.. you'll enjoy your car much more if you work for it than "sacrifice" for it, plus this is your future.

Ok, I live at the regency, my college cost about 4.5k a year and it cost me about 6k to pay rent. If you get a job you can have 3 years paid off if you do something like that.

I was about to say stay at home until I read this.

I moved out when I was 18. I don't regret it one bit.

You have ONE life dude. Get out there and experience it!

Once I graduated from HS, I got the heck outta my home state and ended up here for college and decided I liked it and been living in CO ever since. Never once have I regretted my decesion as it's been the best choice i've made thus far

I don't care to read everyone else's thoughts.

I'm putting a vote in for going to college and experiencing it. The 30k is nice but lots of us have done it on our own. Just because you have the 30k doesn't mean you need to spend it. Use your 30k as you see fit, invest it, use it for school, use some and use some low interest student loans, etc.

I wouldn't have wanted to miss my college years and just the coolness of being out on your own and not having to have a "real" job yet. Work during school, there are a LOT of college jobs where you can do schoolwork (there were at CU). Lots of security, parking, etc type jobs where you can have a book in front of you.

Go away to college, even if it is close to home.
Work during school.
Talk to lots of people, because later on it really is "who you know" more then anything

There's a lot more tips, but the main one is my vote for not staying home just to save money that you were given for something like the oppurtunity to go to school. What else you gonna do, buy a house? Buy a car? That stuff can happen anytime. I wouldn't trade owning a house earlier for missing college.

I just read this and it is the most retarded thing you've said. I'd rather have a BMX bike and "go" to college then a car. There are plenty of people from Boulder who lived in dorms at CU. You can still experience college in your home town (although it is easier for your parents to drop in.)

Even if you have to go to a local school, live at school, the fact you don't have to walk into someone else's house is life changing.

Are you going to live in the dorms or off-campus?

If you're wanting to live in the dorms than I would definitely try going to San Diego. If you're planning on being a commuter student I would just live at home and save some money. The experience that you'll get living in the dorms vs. living off campus is completely different. If you're just going to live off campus to get your "college experience" I wouldn't do it. Commuter students in NO WAY develop the same kind of relationships w/other students as students living on campus. Soooo in short:

Living on campus: YES--move out
Living off campus away from home:NO--stay at home (if your parents are tolerable) and save some moolah

I would be done at my JC so I would only have 2 more years to attend at a State school. No I would not be living in the dorms because only freshman are able to do that. I think im gonna be able to get the best of both worlds and only live at home for the first year, then after that first year at the state school I will have enough to move out.

The reason for this is that the school closer to my house in which I could drive to has a much better system for my major. School is important to me and so is getting the best education I can. As I said before, if i get into San Diego im gonna move down there. If not, well then I will most likly do the above. I apply on October 1st so I will let everyone know what schools I get accepted to and then is when I will have to make the decision.

Thank you all for your opinions and suggetions.
