View Full Version : Ticking Noise?

Lately my car has been making a sort of ticking/pinging noise that is most noticeable at partial throttle and low to mid RPM's (when it's not smothered by the exhaust note basically). In an effort to figure out where it's coming from I tried playing around with the throttle manually while under the hood, and it apparently only occurs while in gear/moving. I've known for a while my tranny isn't in the best of shape (mild grinding in 4th at high rpms, whining noise while decelerating in any gear), and the fact that the noise isn't affected by whether or not the car is turning makes me think it's an extension of one or more of those problems.
Basically I was wondering if it sounds serious enough that I should bring it in for diagnosis/repair ASAP?

Im not sure, if it is a problem in the tranny that already has issues I doubt it will do more damage but not having heard the noise myself I cant say for sure.

Hows that for a non descript answer, lol?

Sorry, noises are the toughest to figure out with just a description.

It's the upper half of the rod bearing in your #3 cylinder.

lol, thanks ryanman and chris_v.
Tobi: I'll go ahead and call in an appt sometime soon, cause the fucker is getting louder and more consistent.
re: Nightfall: I don't think it's in the engine cause of the conditions under which the noise occurs, and I'm resonably certain it's not the valves as they were just recently adjusted as part of the gas saver special. I was quite nervous it was engine related until I went under the hood this morning, though.

Doh! Didn't read you said it only makes the noise while moving.

can it be the LMAS?

Nik, it could still be the engine, even if it only occurs while moving. a lot of knocking type noises generally occur when the engine is under load (accelleration).
