View Full Version : Notes for my install

Hey Tobi, your PM box is teh full.
I'll however just create a thread and post up some tidbits that may be helpful to you regarding this install. Just had a good thread come up recently on the Z board covering the install of the Greddy kit.
http://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=211378
There's actually some good information, especially in the 2nd page of it that covers bending the PS lines around the passenger side turbo as people who have not done this previously had their PS line get melted thru and a lot of no fun after that.
Here's a quote from Phunk regarding that:
"One thing, make sure that you bend the power steering (http://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=211378&page=2#) line by the passenger side turbo (http://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=211378&page=2#) out of the way. Its a common problem to have it rub on the turbo until it wears thru and leaks. What I always do is bend it away as much as I can, which isnt much, and then I take a peace of that blue pushfit fuel line and cut a slit down it to open it up, slide it on around the pipe, and safty wire it on. That way if the engine moves enough to touch it, its padded and will not wear thru for years if ever)."
Also one of the pics in the 1st thread mentions Scott's product, that's the Wastegate relocations I ordered from him and shows you a pretty good angle of where to expected the wastegates to be.

Here's another thread referencing a possible heat issue burning thru a coupler:
http://www.my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=156709
-=[Juztin]=-
08-28-2006, 10:40 PM
A few recommendations I dug up from my notes..
you're going to want to tell the mechanic move the power steering non-pressurized line on the passenger side away from any heat sources...and make sure they re-install the air-bag sensor in a verticle alignment.
And as Kenny said take care of the PS line and the air bag sensor.
Also put the rubber couplings on the turbos before you put them on the car or it will be a pain putting them on with the turbos in place.
Make sure you have the oil line fitting on the turbo pointing in the right direction as they cannot be adjusted with the turbo in place if they are wrong.
wrap w/ heat wrap and also fabricate a bracket to hold it back an additoinal inch from where it currently sits. This should give around 2" of clearance from driver side turbo manifold which will burn a hole right thru it otherwise.

If Tobi is busy, we can always have an install-fest. Just picture the 240 disaster on a larger scale. Nissan + even tighter engine bay + two turbos + easily distracted, non-motivated HAI idiots = estimated completion time in mid 2007. :D

Today's update:
1 bloodied knuckle (now all but 2 are fucked up)
1 puncture wound
1 lump on my skull
2 new special tools made
2 turbos mounted
Got the turbos in, mounted and plumbed for oil today, got the clutch finished and tranny back in. Here are the pics. Greddy has a shitty install manual so I am basically winging it at this point. I had to make some tools to get to the bolts mounting the turbos to the manifolds. They are a tight fit. I have come up with a few things that will keep it reliable like securing the oil lines to the block to keep them from rubbing through anything.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,37.html
Left side turbo mounted, charge pipe adapter installed.
http://www.dynojunkies.com/forum/album_pic,pic_id,38.html
Right side turbo mounted, PS line relocated and covered for protection.

justin, I hope that you don't run into problems with bolts backing out on the manifold/wastegate? it would suck to get to those manifold bolts... i know alot of the s2k guys have problems with bolts backing out...
-=[Juztin]=-
09-17-2006, 12:14 PM
Thanks Colocomp - Tobi will probably post on here the date when it's getting tuned, but I can say it'll probably be during the week, in which case very few people will probably be able to make it. Heck I know I wouldn't probably show until around 5pm cause of work :( But I'll let you know none-the-less
Simon - I've never heard any reports whatsoever of bolts backing out in FI'd Z's in general but I have a little preempitive fix in the works. Just a little update, all the major turbo parts have been installed, FMIC mounted, almost all filter piping & charge piping has been run. Just on to the numerous little things like installing BOV, fuel pump, turbo timer, plugs, injectors etc.
Also I ended up having to switch back to stock exhaust since the Borla exhaust was cracked AGAIN! ARGH! The borla exhaust has been nothing but trouble for both myself and Tobi. It was also ghetto fixed to prevent it from leaking. But since it cracked again, I decided to go back to stock exhaust for the long run as the metal quality in the stock exhaust is 10x's better. Also, the stock exhaust has flex sections in the Y pipe so that should also greatly reduce any vibrations in the exhaust piping/downpipe etc so should also protect against any bolt's backing out issues if they were a possibility.
It'll probably hurt the spool a slight bit cause the Y pipe has a small cat in it, pluls it's 2.5" piping, and it'll be really quite exhaust note. But still not going to be a sleeper with the wastegate dumps dumping directly to the ground :) Should scare both small children and moms alike. The wastegate relocation kit looks damn slick under the car with the dumptubes looking like they mean all business ;)

Update for Sept 18, 2006 from Honda Ghandi
I finished most of the stuff under the hood today, I am missing a couple of couplers though. (Thanks again Greddy) The coolant overflow bottle fit terribly in the position that they would have you install it so I made my own install bracket and put it on the right side of the fan shroud. I also installed the catch can today. Tomorrow the intercooler couplers will arrive and I can finish the under hood stuff and move into the interior and electrics.

justin, the car is GO! I stayed late last night to work out some bugs and came in early this morning and got it finalized. Im going to take a few more pics right now of the rest of the install and take a dyno video. (I have never tried a video with this camera, hope it comes out) I will post up the remainder of the notes and pics here in a bit as well as a dyno chart. The numbers aren't as good as we had hoped for but I think you will be pleased.

Final update.
Yesterday we finished all the little odds and ends and got the car on the dyno for the first time. After about 6 hours on the dyno doing load range tuning and rpm /load tuning we came up with some pretty impressive numbers. Here are the rest of the pics.
Starting with my left hand after "knuckling" down and finishing this car ahead of schedule. ;)

The car is rediculous! Boost is so much fun and man those wastegates are teh LOUD! I already scared a few people giving them ricer boost dumps!
I had an STi initially get behind me after the driver looked like he noticed my IC. He paced me for a while, I then proceeded to give him a demo that the IC is not merely show, and he immediately then fell back and turned off the highway, so no George vs. X stories yet :(

I usually like USPS, but their lack of tracking sucks. At work, we switched to them to save a few bucks on sending out maintenance tapes, but now we have pissed off customers because they don't get their shit. On the other hand, today I came home to find that UPS had delivered a package for another address... that's the third damn one this week!
