Mario, what lenses are you using?
Mario
08-28-2006, 02:25 PM
Nick,
I use quite a few lenses. My current stock consists of a 50mm f/1.8, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6, and a 75-300 f/4-5.6. When I do weddings though, I typically rent a 25-105 f/4 IS as well.
My next lens is going to be an f/2.8 telephoto. I really want the 70-200 f/2.8 but it's near $1400 for the good one. Business investment, but I have to do a couple more paid shoots before I can purchase one. :)

I noticed alot of your EXIF's were showing f/1.8@50mm esp on the portraits, they are clean! What 75-300 f/4-5.6 lense do you have?? I too have been lookin at the 70-200 IS, savin my pennies!
Who do you rent thru? Mikes downtown??

Thanks. I use the 50mm for almost every portrait and 'in between' shot I need. I have the Canon 75-300. That one is a slightly touchier lens. I hardly use it for portraits. It's usually my choice of lens for automotive:

You create it once, the actions memorize what you did during the changes....
Then the next time you have an image, you just press one button and it does it all for you!

Very nice pictures, your wife is a good looking lady..the dress is also very classy. Tall blonde bridesmaid..why the heck would she be single? If she wants to meet a tall guy that sells porn for a living..send her my way? ;)
As far as the pictures go, some good work in there mario, I talked to a guy at quakecon (the official photographer) and he was letting me drool on his lenses..he had some nice toys. Best of luck to you in that business, if I hear of anyone with a need, I'll definately throw them your way.

If you don't know all the steps that are needed in the action (however resizing and pasting to a black canvas is pretty easy) check out www.phidong.com Then go to the class section. Professor dong will school you in the ways of CS

No it was great no alterations, so I got off cheap on that side of things I just gave her the $$ and she got it.
Bedlam which Bridesmaid are you talking about there are 2 tall blondes the single one is the one in the middle of the bridesmaid photos.

Mario, when you burn those images onto a CD for people, do you have the black border/copyright on them? I'm assuming you do, but was curious.
That would be SOOOOOOOOOOOO much simpler than what I've always done with my images. I usually try to sample some color from the image to use for the font color, so that you can see it without it blending in or standing out too much. But I don't add a border to it at all, so I have to carefully pick a color so you can even read it. About the only part I can do with an action is the text placement and sizing. Far from automatic... so I guess I'm really wondering if you do leave the borders on there, what have been most peoples opinions about it.

No sir I do not. The only thing I put border/copyright on are my web images. Final prints to my customers do not contain any watermarks.

Interesting. I've always found most photographers always stamp some kind of copyright on there. Not that there is anything wrong with not doing it. :D

Odd! Most photographers I know don't stamp it. That's too funny.
I do have my customers sign an image use permission form that states within my company I have full rights to the image for portfolio, print, etc.
I may do stamps on my senior portrait wallets (just because that'll be free advertising right there pretty much), but that'll be about the extent of it. :)

Maybe that's what I'm thinking of, portraits and stuff. I've never had wedding pics done, and I don't remember seeing if they had it or not.
I've never done photography for hire before... which is why I'm curious. I've had several friends ask me to shoot their weddings and I told them no. I've never actually had any training with a camera at all, and I certainly wouldn't want to fuck up someone's irreplaceable wedding images.
I've got a guy at work that's into mountain man shit wanting me to give him a quote to go up one weekend and take a group photo of them all decked out. I've just never done it before and haven't really thought through the business aspects of it before.
Maybe one day we can get together and talk photography... :D

I would love to! I've had no formal training at all. Fortunately, especially with photography, if your portfolio is impressive enough, they never ask or care.

Right on. Neither have I. It's fairly obvious, at least to me, that you've figured out alot more than I have, especially lens-wise. I've got a 17mm-35mm aspherical wide angle and a 28mm-300mm telephoto, both Sigma. Not the best, I know. Any tips you got for taking group portraits outdoors would be helpfull.
One thing I worry about it using metering on the people for the correct exposure, then the sky washes out and you lose any blue that might have been there...
(you will also notice that I make up terminology as I go along since I don't really know what stuff is really supposed to be called... :D)

When people pay for photography packages they are usually paying for the "rights" of the photos as well. If you're not selling the rights to the photo then you need to keep a watermark on the photo somewhere. Grassroots caught a LOT of shit from me when I got the check & saw the magazine had my watermark removed. I called them up...told them they didn't buy the rights to the photo but singly JUST the photo. They promptly sent me another check.

Outdoor group portraits are hard unless you have external lighting, just because you have very little control of what can happen.
For metering people and the sky, I usually shoot a double exposure. Meaning that I will expose the first shot for the sky (people are usually underexposed), and then the second shot I expose the subject properly. Then I combine the two in Photoshop leaving me a perfectly exposed image.

Cool idea, I hadn't thought of that. However, how do you get the camera to set the exposure for the sky vs. people without moving the camera? Or more importantly without the people moving. :D I guess the people are more important since it's much easier to select the sky and blue it up a bit.

The people moving won't be that important, and if there is a movement large enough you can just clone it in PS.
If that doesn't work, you can also do this:
Select the background and duplicate it to another layer. You can then dodge/burn that layer and blend it. Sometimes, depending on the image, this isn't the best quality method, but it works.

Sounds like a good trick. I haven't played with PS as much as you have to know all the uber cool tricks. If I get the job, I might hit you up again if I get stuck.
Also, I keep meaning to mention to you about doing business cards. If you want to make some that are thick, full color, and have glossy UV coating on both sides let me know. They are cool because you can put some of your best shots on their and hand them out. Good advertising. It ends up being aroung $0.12 per card for a 1000, and it goes down from there. Let me know if you are interested. If I'd of thought about it, I could have given you one of mine at TC's dyno day so you could see how they come out. I can always mail you a few samples if you want...

I am planning on hosting a "Photoshoot and Photoshop Night" at my place with a couple of close friends. I'll keep you updated on a time/date.
Sounds great about the business cards! I have a graphic designer who is working on my online portfolio right now - and along with that he will be doing brochure and business card designs to compliment the online portfolio.
Can I do multiple designs within that 1000? Let's say if I want to change a sample photo so that way I have some variety?
No need to mail me a sample - next time I am heading to a meet I'll just ask ya to bring some. :)

Definitely let me know when PS&PS night is...
Unfortuantely 500 is the smallest run I can do with the printer, and they all have to be the
same. And it costs more per card to do smaller runs. My price table is located here. (http://www.alterception.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=services_cards)
Obviously you don't have to add the paypal fee if you pay by check. But I do have to add sales tax. However since it's not a generic order off the web, I can minimize sales tax based upon what city and county you live in. As long as you don't live in Westminster and/or Adams County, I would only have to charge you state sales tax.
I also usually have the printer ship directly to me so that I can inspect them before delivering them to my customer just in case they messed something up, which has only happened once, and my customer ended up getting 1000 more free cards because the printer forget to UV coat the back side of the card (which makes it glossy).

Surprised you dont do at least some sort of digital watermark or something. You should really consider it. Its normally not visible to the end user and may save you some headache if you get more serious down the road. I'd prolly be intrested in some meet/shoot night too..I had a good time with the turotials on the canon site..I think I may take some classes or something too if possible. :)
