Went for the free food and drink to the Acura dealership this evening for the RDX TurboBash. Good shrimp, sandwhiches, cheeses, and deserts. Live Jazz musician, and a CD with such artists as Crystal Method, Dorfmeister, and Paul Oakenfold.

Say goodbye BMW X3, hello RDX. The luxury, performance, and price will terrorize the dreams of BMW for years to come. The new ultimate driving machine has arrived. The speed is probably on par or better than the X3, with an estimated 7.5 second 0-60 time.

The exterior, while a slight departure from the smooth lines of other Acura models, still steals glances from casual on-lookers with inquisitive looks. From the men in proper business atire to the burger king window attendant, everyone aspires to learn more about Acura's new vehicle. The integrated airscoop for the TMIC flows nicely under hood, and does not grossly distort the lines ala Subaru.

The interior is new and fresh, full of luxury appointments and Acura refinement. This model was outfitted with the technology package, which includes the world renowned Acura navigation system with backup camera, 10 speaker ELS surround sound that puts bose to utter shame and rivals a proper Lexus Mark Levinson system, bluetooth, informational and maintenance minder display, and a boost meter.

I wasn't a fan of the speed of the shifts with paddle shifters, but the ability to use it is kind of cool, and it is smooooth. The 5 speed auto seems to always be in the right gear at the right time, even in auto mode. Toss it into a corner and the SH-AWD is sure to please, then power out of it with an upshift and some throttle. Cornering is flat and impressive, comparable to a BMW 3 series, but with much more control and sophistication.

The turbo spools to full boost very quickly (aroung 2500 RPM), and pegs the boost meter all the way to (and probably past) redline. The drive-by-wire is smooth and not nearly as much of an interruption between shifts of a 6MT.

MSRP is $36,496 in addition to $670 destination for the loaded RDX with technology package, and $33K-ish without the tech pack. The waiting lists are extremely long and all of the dealers are pricing very close to MSRP.

On a seperate note, SH-AWD is rumored to be included in the Acura TL Type-S, or at least on the next gen of TL. SH-AWD is also rumored to be in the 2008-9 Acura TSX with a possible 2.3L Turbo engine ala RDX. RSX is end-of-life this year and a TSX coupe is also a rumor, although Canada already has an Acura CSX which is an upgraded Civic. I've also heard that a version of the SH-AWD is included with the 2007 CR-V (more on that later) and on the new-gen up and coming MDX.

And for those of you slightly interested, Honda also has a 1235cc 4-stroke 4-cylinder turbo JetSki.

I took one for a test drive and loved everything about it.
