View Full Version : Building my engine.... AGAIN

Well, stock internals and turbo didn't last long. I didn't blow the motor, but figured it would be best to take it apart and rebuild it with some stronger stuff before I mess that expensive block up.

So here's what's happening--

I pulled the motor out not this past week, but the week before that. Pulled everything apart and everything looked good, the #4 piston had the ring gaps aligned, I think that's why it started to burn oil under VTEC/Boost.

The block is at the machine shop right now getting Hone/Bore, Balance rotating Ass'ly, boring my fuel rail for the mustang injectors, polish crank, make sure fat end of the rods are in the round. ACL berings and Tial wastegate will be here end of the week, and the machine work will be done then as well.

Here's what's going in:

Arias 8.5:1 CR pistons .
Eagle H beam rods
STR block guard
Tial .65 Bar 35mm wastegate
Stock exhaust side inner springs going into the intake side
Skunk2 Titanium Retainers
Ford Motorsports 30lb (315cc) Injectors
Pulled the butterfly valves out of the GS-R intake manifold, so the short runners are ALWAYS open.

I'll be looking to run ~16psi, and hit ~400hp. I'm going to be buying some 22" slicks sometime this week as well. I'm hunting for 11 second time slips. Here's some pics of the work that we've done (tdjb-potc and I)

*sigh* it never stops with you does it? Imagine having those 11s or 10s with all the money you would have saved and then bought John's Supra :p

Oh, and 315cc mustang injectors? Your car is destined to fail now, hehe. Dude, groupbuycenter.com has some RC injectors of bigger sizes for that hungry engine of yours, good prices too, something I've thought about getting myself.

Anyways, good luck man!
How does Katie like her B18C? What's her latest times?

Katie is running high 15's w/ the B18C1. I got 8 mustang injectors for $230, and I'm selling the other 4 to another bro. Sure, I could own a Supra, but I don't want to know what Insurance is like for a 20 yr old Male on that bad boy.

The machine shop is said to be done by the end of this week, then I should be able to put it back together and back in the car by begining of next week. That gives me 2 weeks to put enough break-in miles on it before the July 7 IDRC race. I really need to pick up some 22" x 7" x 14" Drag slicks.

You're right, I do spend way too much money on it.... oops! OH well, it's all in good fun, right???

hehehe, Good work, got to have some fast Honda's out there :D

Hey, what fuel pressure are you going to be running? Unless its really high (over 200PSI!!) those 30 lb injectors will NOT Support 400HP, or even close to it. I have 6, and I'm having to go to 50# injectors to get the fuel I need to support 400HP to the wheels.

Tell me your fuel pressure, and your BSFC if you know it (probably around .6-.65 with the turbo)

Assuming aout 50PSI on your fuel pressure, you'll need 4 70# injectors to get 400 or so to at the crank.

Why not give it up and buy a supra? Starting with a car that's already fast is a BIG advantage...

While I can apprecaite your tenacity and drive, you seem to be spending a LOT of $$ on the car. Sure - the 12 second pass was impressive, but at what cost?

My $0.02 worth. And good luck with it. Again. :)

Yea, stop with the fast FWD thing, I want that position! ;)

I don't think he could afford the Supra insurance John.

I hear ya on the insurance thing, it's way too expensive even for my CRX, and I have a pretty clean driving record. I can't even imagine what it would cost for a Supra

Chris, the stcok 210cc injectors supported the 12.8 et, along with the FMU. I don't have a FP gauge, or I'd tell you. Couldn't tell you anyway right now, cuz the motor is in no shape to run. As for the Supra, sure, it would be cool, but I don't know all the odds and ends like I do the Honda stuff. I'll worry about a car built to be fast when I'm done with college.

Wow you ran the 12.8 on the stock injectors? What CFM does the turbo flow and what psi where you running? I have been toying around with the idea of turning the boost up on my engine. I am running 12psi right now. I have stock injectors, 255lph Walbro pump, FMU, and a Greddy 18G (600ish cfm)

You REALLY need to think about larger injectors.
Any idea what your A/F ratio was? I bet anything your injectors went static (read stayed open) in the upper RPM ranges when you ran the 12's.

Check out this:

Find out what stock FP is at idle.

If you want 400 RELIABLE hp, you need bigger injectors. You may have run your 12 second 1/4 with stock injectors, but I'm sure they were 100% DC and running lean - that will get you great power at 13.5 or 14:1 fuel mixture, but you will be on the edge or over for detonation. IMO, better to be on the rich side, and have some DC left at the top end then push under-rated injectors on a very expensive new engine build.

I data logged the car and the timing stayed pretty even throughout the powerband in all gears-- didn't advance or retard for rich/lean conditions, and that was with the boost turned up. I'm a pretty stuborn son of a bitch, but we'll see how these treat me. I haven't even started the car yet, let alone dropped the motor in.

Well, once you get it going, do two things for us:
1. Get a wideband 02 on it on a dyno
2. Data log it, and watch your injector pulse widths. Given the RPM's you run to, I'd say anything over 15MS is bad.

Will the mustang injector go in without modifications??? ie. Ecu, resistors? if so how much do you want for the other four?

for anyone that cares, motor was built yesterday, and dropped in last night.
got a call this morning that she was up and running, purring like a kitten hehe.
I'm sure chris will post up some of the pictures I took when he gets time.
Now the break-in begins!

Hell yeah! the break in sucks! I hated it

Yeah, we got 'er together and running. The only bump in the road is when one of my mustang injectors had the wiring clip reversed on it and it was firing on 3 on initial start-up, aside from that, the motor is golden. I've been keeping the RPM's below 4000, but today I got enough balls to zing it to VTEC engagement (5300), which it felt a lot more like your typical turbo car. Mad lag until boost hits, then it pulls like mad. Anyway, here's some pictures.

I had to modify the mustang injectors to get them in-- cut the entire wiring harness clip off w/ a dremel, so just the metal prongs are sticking out, then my harness clips onto that. I'll take $120 for the other 4.
