Are you just running the motor N/A or turbo? You can use stock LS pistons. What do you mean "do the ECU"?

Slap some B16 pistons! if n/a.

Well.. you're about as descriptive as a blank piece of paper explaining why Jessica Alba is so fucking hot.

What head? OBD0/OBD1/OBD2? If it's an OBD1 head, and you wanna use an OBD2 ECU, you need to have a conversion harness, or vice versa. Same goes with the wiring harness. If you have an OBD1 head in an OBD2 wired car, you will probably need to swap the engine harness to OBD1, and so on and so fourth.

you need an ecu period so the motor will run if you want vtec to function it has to be a vtec ecu p28 or p72 among others

I don't think he was questioning that.. he was merely questioning which ECU to use.

the car is obd-0 but the head im looking at is obd-1

after i find out the exact head i get i will find out what ECU to use it was a pretty vague question but i just wanted a little info to point me in the right direction

well it really doesn't matter what OBD the head is. however since he said the car is OBD 0 he will need OBD 0 injectors and distributor. thats the only thing that makes a difference. and yes he will have to add vtec wires, but its super easy.

and he asked if he "needed" the vtec ecu.... well the answer is no, the car will run off of any ecu, but to properly have the vtec work he will need to have a VTEC ecu

OBDO:
there are 2 i believe one is POW or PWO, the other one i cant remember. they are both B16 ecu's (8200 redline)

OBD1:
P72 GSR (8200 redline)
P28 D16z6 (7400? redline)
P30 B16 ecu (8200 red line)

OBD2:
P72 GSR (8200 redline)
__?__ D16y8 (7400? redline)
__?__ 99-00 B16 (8200 redline)

you said you are doing all motor, for now... if you plan on boosting ever in the future then just leave the stock LS pistons. raising the compression will only get you a few HP, and you would have to completely rebuild if you ever wanted boost in the future. if you never ever plan to boost it then A) im sorry and B) you can use B16 or GSR pistons, or other aftermarket ones, but dont expect a huge difference between stock LS pistons (9.8:1 compression) and B16 pistons (around 11:1 compression)

This is the guy asking if "anyone has any cheap parts" to make his car cool and fast. Yeeeeees! Tackling the "cheap" LSVTEC setup.

thanks for all the info guys this has all helped and i know to be reliable and have this work out i will be spending a good amount...and if i have a 2000 si b16 head i just need obd-o b16 injectors, distributor and ecu..

and if i have a 2000 si b16 head i just need obd-o b16 injectors, distributor and ecu..

correct.

i have an OBD0 b16 ecu, dizzy, and injectors i might part with if interested. i can also do the ls/vtec conversion if needed.
