My friend need an Alternator for his Grand Am, it is a 2.4l v6. He wants me to do it but I do not know where the tension pulley is, or how the release the tension. I think I have found it but I am not sure. He is buying the part; he just wants me to put it in his car. He is offering 20 and you choice of drink. If one of you wants to do it that would be, better then me. It looks to be three bolts. I have never worked on a GM so I am worried I might mess up something. He wants to get it done by Sunday.

i could do it on sunday if he supplies at least a case of beer.

BTW its either a 2.4 4 cylinder, 3.1 V6, or 3.4 V6. find out which one.

is it driveable? it would be a lot better if he could get it to my house.

Don't let any of these people do it, man up and help your friend out. Plus you get $20 and a drink. Alternators are easy, and it's probably a spring-loaded tensioner if it's on a domestic, so you just have to bend it back and slip the belt on it. Make him buy a Haynes/Chiltons manual for it if you're really concerned about screwing it up. They're not as good as a Helms manual, but they are cheap, available at most auto parts/book stores, and plenty good enough for replacing an alternator.

I really don't think you have any idea how bad it is for this retard to touch anything at all. You should go and read his posts, and people's signatures that have quotes of him.

If I'm not mistaken the Alternator on the slightly older GM V6's is very easy to change out. There is no such thing as a 2.4L V6. It might be a 3.4L V6 or a 2.4L 4 cyclinder.
Just an fyi.

I was thinking his friend needed to learn a lesson about giving somebody $20 and "you choice of drink" to work on his car. I think Tonnerre is exactly the right person to teach him that lesson.

There are quite a few models during this year range from GM that are a pain in the penis to change belts on. You probably can't see that tensioner because it's located underneath the left motor mount. You have the remove the cover, then the bracket, go into the wheel well, remove those bolts, I don't even want to explain the rest. At a shop you will get charged more for this extra labor. But maybe its not on this model and you're just retarded. Theres always that too...

I don't think any FWD GM motors (other than maybe some of the Northstar/Shortstars) compare to the 3.4 DOHC V6 (LQ1) for being a pain in the butt to work on. I did the alternator on mine over the weekend. It took almost 6 hours... IIRC, the manual says to pull the axle and drop the subframe... The alternator is behind the engine, under the head, between the firewall and the transmission. I had to remove a tie rod and loosen a subframe bolt to get to it and that was the easy way! To change the spark plugs, the 96-97 motors require a complete removal of the upper intake manifold...

I think there are two types of GM mechanics- those who refuse to work on the LQ1 and those who have never worked on the LQ1! :)

The pushrod V6 GM motors take about 15 minutes to change the alternator though...
