View Full Version : What do I need to look for when it comes to motorcycles.

Tonnerre

Ok, I give up on cars. Insurance cost to much and with school in a little over a month it is time to do something smarter. I am not getting a moped. I am thing of a used Katana or Ninja, Something like that, 500 cc. I was wondering if you have any ideas of what I should get. Also what should I look for in the helmet and jacket/legs. If there is anyhing I should look for wen buying a bike and so on.

A motorcycle for you is not a smart decision.

yeah a car you will be safe. a motorcycle you will be dead. I agree w/ Robie it is a bad bad idea... Shit your bicycle is going to go for $400 take that damn money and put it into getting the teg fixed and road ready. So are you going to get Snow tires for the Motorcycle, so you can drive it in the winter? You need to think long term not just right here right now.

Your common sense level is that of my 8 year old daughter.

Look for other cars on the road when you're on a motorcycle.

I think you should buy another pawn shop bike and make $200 personally.

You WILL KILL YOURSELF if you buy a sport bike, so for the sake of our enjoyment don't get a bike so we can continue to laugh at you.

If your ins is insane on your car, it will be WAY more on a sportbike.

Brian
07-13-2006, 12:04 PM
sportbikes are freakin expensive to insure unless you just get liability (still bad depending on your record). I had many days where I quoted 18-20 year old kids 8K+ for a 6 month policy.

BluByU
07-13-2006, 12:13 PM
Yes, look for a motorcycle that has 4 tires, doors, seatbelts, and you can buy an buspass for.

David
07-13-2006, 12:26 PM
how much do you think insurance would be for say a 19 year old kid with a completely clean record?

STIBungy
07-13-2006, 12:29 PM
I say sell the teg and get a lifetime bus pass and a vasectomy.

Brian
07-13-2006, 12:30 PM
liability only, or with comp and collision? Collision is usually really expensive on a full fairing bike. You usually have to total the bike even if it's a fairly minor crash.

just liability in that case

Tonnerre
07-15-2006, 06:28 AM
my quote was for 670 for a full year. If I wreck it will be totaled. right? Well I just need it for the medical bills if I live. I can buy another bike for 2k after that so why do I need full covrage? And it is still not the basic. My accident gave me an idea of what insurance I need.

For your price range (and propensity to run heavy things into other, heavier things), maybe this (http://powersports.honda.com/scooters/model.asp?ModelName=Metropolitan&ModelYear=2006&ModelId=CHF506) would suit you better.

Insurance on my 06 R6 is 1400/yr for full coverage with a very bad driving record. I must insist you take the MSF course if your actually going to buy a bike, I just got done with mine today and it was great.

Tonnerre
07-16-2006, 11:53 PM
I will but I am getting it anyways. Even if I do not like riding, I can get to where I need to go. Some people do not like driving but they do anyways. This will also keep me from wasteing my money on stupid shit.

Blownbimer
07-17-2006, 11:13 AM
When are you getting this bike? have you signed up for the safe rider corse yet?

If your not going to have PIP, do you have your own medical insurance?

Just remember, its not if you go down....its when.

When you do get the bike, go get your permit at least, and I'd go to a parking lot with you at least and help you learn a bit...but you gota do the class, its worth every penny!

Tonnerre
07-17-2006, 02:06 PM
Do you got cones and stuff like that? We have a huge parking lot that is empty that I can train at. Also I will take the class.

I'm pretty sure by default Motorcycle insurance doesn't cover medical. It covers someone's car door when you dent it. I could be wrong but I think when I got mine they specifically said there was no medical.

Brian
07-17-2006, 04:51 PM
there is no pip coverage in colorado anymore. You can add medpay, but it only covers 5K on most policies. That's enough to cover the ambulance ride to the hospital if you are lucky.

stu
07-17-2006, 04:57 PM
I saw someone with $25,000 worth of Med pay once.

It's only $500 to ride to the hospital in an ambulence by the way. CT scans are where it starts to get expensive.

Brian
07-17-2006, 05:11 PM
I know, I was just being sarcastic ;). I forgot what the maximums were for med pay on a motorcycle policy. I know it can get expensive though, and defaults to 5K if you opt for it. If you don't have medical insurance it's a good thing to check into.

Tonnerre
07-17-2006, 06:06 PM
The crash cost 10k total, I did not have med pay. Insurace covered it all.

Brian

Blownbimer
07-17-2006, 06:49 PM
Interesting....I've always had my own medical insurance, so I never really worried about it. Good to know though!

I took my safe rider classes at Front range...If I remember, I signed up on the front range web sight.

Just be careful out there....seems like a lot of people get a sport bike, and leave their brain at home... I have friends I ride with, and people I know, who I will not ride with again. Always watch out for that.

You have to be kidding me Tonnerre... 250 a month?!?!?! That's fucking rediculous. I made way more working at safeway. I make around 4k a month now selling cars, you need more money if you plan on getting a bike.

I got into my motorcycle class by going to the MSF Website and calling a local number. I love my bike...

BTW, My insurance quote was too high and they have me at 48 a month for full coverage. Here are the coverages.

458/yr
Age : 18
Multiple Tickets : Careless Driving, Improper or Unsafe Vehicle, Failure To Signal
Bike: 2006 Yamaha R6

FULL COVERAGE
100,000 Medical Coverage (Along with Medical through my work)
300,000 Incident Coverage
50,000 Property Coverage
1,000 Death Benifit (goes to parents if I die)

Ok here is the break down, I get 250 from work, I get 1000 avrage a month to live. So it is 1250. 250 is for anything I want to put it at. rent is 460 and insurance is 70 now. So food at max for me is 200 a month. But that said that leaves 730 out of 1250, Not bad. Then in Sept, Rent will be covered by americorp so I will have more money to work with. So it is liveable.
