This thing doesn't look terribly comfortable.

you've been doing a lot of research on XD's... you planning on getting one?

I own the XD 45.
The grip is slightly larger on both (girth) than most which is why I got one cause I got teh bannana hands! The XD 40 has a shorter grip, thus holds one less cartridge.
All in all... I LOVE the pistol though!

I'm debating, man. Unless I go with a custom barrel, a Gemtech doesn't appear to fit on an XD. I'm also not sure now much I'm going to like the grip safety. That looks fucking annoying.
The other alternatives I'm considering are a GLOCK 21 and the M1911.

The XD40 series pistols are in the 400-600 range... they're fairly affordable.

How much are you paying for ammunition? And what are you buying?

13-14$ box of 50.
It's American Eagle by Federal Arms.
I was given insight by a former law enformcement officer about ammo for that caliber.
I used 100 rounds on the first trip and it was Magtech @ same price. No problems... but I'm gonna go with the former LE officer's advice because he said when he was active.... they ordered them by the TRUCK load!
Same goes for their 5.56 rounds. American Eagle by Federal.

Of all the ammo I've put through my .22LR, I've liked Federal the best. Same goes for my 20ga and 12ga shotguns. I guess it's no surprise that their .40cal ammo is no different - and good to know that LEOs recommend it too.

Self defense = Hydra-Shock!
I've read some good and bad things about those particular rounds. I've read that they're incredibly effective, and also incredibly ineffective. But then again, it depends on the caliber one is using (I suppose), and where you hit somebody.

Home defense or self defense whilest hunting only for me. Should only take one or two rounds of a 45 ACP hydra-shock. If they're still in the house after that.... I have a couple more clips for them and a friend who's DAYUM good at repairing drywall!
Range & what not will be full metal jacket boi!
Next = Bring on the 5.56! W00T!

I'm waiting for Springfield to come out with a slim-line type laser that attaches to the tactical rail and a tactical holster.
Then it's on like Donkey Kong!
Or.... if I'm REALLY in the mood.... just get the M4A3 and attach the laser w/ a SureFire suppressor!

the hydra shocks that i shot into wet phone books did not expand as much as i would have thought. they were .40 165gr.
the ranger t's did a awesome job... not to mention they are razor sharp...
tested were ranger t's, hydra shoxs, gold dots, winchester (walmart) JHP's... the ranger t's did the best

Since I just recently purchased an XD40, I think what I'm going to do is buy a couple boxes of the Hydra-Shoks and Ranger Ts... then buy the 9mm barrel from Springfield and use that when we go target shooting.
9mm ammo is a hell of alot cheaper.

still practice with the .40 S&W... always practice with what you carry...

And believe me I did... I put every round of ammo (minus the Speer JHPs) I had into a wooden log and a target. :D

Chris, did you get the 3" or 4"
I shot a 9mm XD last night and didn't like it. That safety on the back is more noticable than I thought it would be. I didn't feel very comfortable, it seemed like in my normal position the gun aimed high which is wierd since they claim that's what other guns do. It also jammed 3 times going through about 40 rounds, cleaning it may have solved that problem though.

I haven't heard anything good about the Hydra-Shocks. Winchester Ranger-T's kick their ass all over the place.

I've got the 4" service model. The safety wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be, but it's a pain in the fucking ass when you're taking the gun down.

That's not a metaphor, is it?
