Is it possible that excessive heat in the engine bay can cause the starter to fail? Lately it seems that after driving around for a while and after I shut down and restart again the car just wont start. I've jumped the battery before and that does not do anything. Once I open the hood and let the engine cool for about an hour, it starts up again. Don't have this problem any other time except after driving for a while. My coolant temps are also on the high side so it does get hot in there. Only way I can start the car again is if I clutch start it. I've already heat wrapped the manifold to control temps and I am about ready to get a thermal barrier for the starter. Let me know if heat may be the factor in this problem or should I start troubleshooting somewere else. Thanks

Does it crank and not start or does the starter not even turn or engage? BTW, what car is this?

Its possible. Some of the older Honda starters have bad contacts in them too, may not be a heat issue at all.

It does not crank at all, like no power to starter. Once it cools down then it starts up again. Car is '88 CRX with turboed '99 GSR motor. I've just done the washer trick on the hood in an attempt to vent out excess heat but I still got the problem. I'm also beginning to wonder what other components of the engine is being affected by heat soak.

No clicking at all...

I would check to see if the starter is actually getting a 12v signal from the ignition switch then. They usually click when they go bad.

I'll check it out tonight. Now that I think about it, the starter does click once in a while. Can you PM me a price on a new starter in case this may be the problem. The motor is '99 GSR B18c1 but the tranny is a cable YS1 which I think is from a '93 Integra GSR? So I'm not sure how to identify which starter to get. Thanks.

I might have a used one here that would work. A reman starter is $113 +tax. plus core charge if you dont give me back your old one.
