i finally got my new 8" subs after 2 months of waiting. i finally got a prototype box made for them but i still have to finish carpeting the box and installing the plexiglass amp rack. the box definitly hits harder than you would ever expect to hear from 2 8" subs. the box can easily hit 30 hz and sounds more like a single 12 than 8's if i were to guess i would say it is hitting in the 135-138 db range with 400 watts.
the subs will handel 400 watts RMS and have a 1.5 inch cone travel. the magnets weigh 10 pounds each and are double stacked.
i don't have a finished picture of the new box yet but it looks exactly like my dual 10 but smaller by 6 inches and 4 inches less deep. also it will only have 1 cover instead of the 2 that the dual 10 has. here is a picture of the dual 10's without the covers installed.

just imagine it being about 25% smaller and with a single cover on it. it is designed to hold a 5 channel amp. this is for the person that wants to keep some trunk space or has a small hatch or trunk.

here is my new 8" sub.

Some of the generic consumer grade amps do a good job, but for some real power, something line PPI or SoundStream is the way to go. Real power as in clean, performing way beyond their advertised specs...

I've got a SoundStream 6.0 "class a powersupply" amp sitting on a shelf in my garage, waiting to be put into something. Rated at 25 wpc into 4 ohms, stable to 1/4 ohm mono. :) Nice sub amp, and hopefully some day it'll be in my wifes honda odyssey, pushing a couple subs...

Kevin - I'd be interested in talking to you about hiding a couple of 8s in the van somewhere. Do you do other work than just subs & boxes? I could do the install myself, but I'm just not all that into it anymore. Do you have dual voicecoil drivers? I'd love to be able to push this amp hard again.

yea i make custom boxes as well.
currently i only have single voice coil subs but i can get them made into DVC by simply swapping out the part for a DVC. i would have to tell them to make a change on the production line though. can you run a pair of subs to get the load where you want it?
