WESTMINSTER - A motorcyclist was killed after he was struck by lightning while driving on U.S. 36 Wednesday afternoon.

The Westminster Fire Department says the man was struck while driving between Church Ranch Boulevard and Sheridan Boulevard at around 5:15 p.m.

After the motorcyclist was hit he lost control and crashed against the center median. The motorcycle ended up 150 yards from where the lightning hit the asphalt.

Rescue workers could not revive the man and he was pronounced dead on scene.

Authorities did not immediately release his name pending notification of his family.

The lightning left a crater in the asphalt about 18 inches long, eight inches wide, and four inches deep.

CDOT has repaired the damage to the road.

U.S. 36 was shut down to one lane for about two hours because of the accident.

Did they determine that the cause of death was from the lightning though? If lightning struck in the street anywhere near me while I was on a bike I can guarantee I'd be crashing a few seconds later.

That really sucks... what's weird is I was just thinking about something like that earlier... wondering what the odds would be to get hit while driving. Strange.

He should have bought a lotto ticket last week his chances were higher to win the loto then get hit by lightning.
I wonder what will happen to his bike?

My truck was struck by lightning years ago, it fubarred the electrical system.
